Panic

Story Behind The Song by Andy Cairns (Sep 3rd, 2004)

This kicked off with a dirty bassline from Michael (so dirty it left skidmarks). I came up with the chorus and Neil, the dirty wee bastard, decided to bring the thrash metal back.

In keeping with the anxious, wired and paranoid nature of the lyrics we decided to keep the music old school T?, bit of Big Black, bit of Ministry, bit of early Metallica and just to keep it up to date we added a dash of Lightning Bolt. (These are my fave bits in the song, join in the headbanging by looking out for 1:14-1:19 and 1:44-1:48. Poetry in motion, I assure you).

Some of you may have already heard this live. Originally this tune was to open the album with an acoustic intro just like old thrash records but we never got a chance to record the acoustic intro. Maybe just as well.

The lyrics were written while flicking through news channels on television. How original. They were also prompted by reading Jennifer Government by Max Barry.

Lyrics

Another government off the hook
Another programme off the books
Pass the buck
And leave us fucked
Distant and helpless
Story of our lives
White collar crime

Another government off the hook
Lamb-like slaughter
Adrenaline makes it taste better
Pass the buck
And leave us fucked
Distant and helpless
Story of our lives

Panic! Panic! Panic! Panic!
White collar crime

This is progress
Don't look down
Pass the buck
And leave us fucked
Distant and helpless
Story of our lives

Panic! Panic! Panic! Panic!
White collar crime
