Perish The Thought
Story Behind The Song by Andy Cairns (Sep 3rd, 2004)
Michael sent me a CD of various pieces of music he’d been working on at home. One of them was a piece that reminded me of Joy Division when they tighten the tension. I put lyrics and melody to it.
Michael came over to my house so that we could work on some more material. I’d been listening to Rapeman’s version of Just Got Paid by ZZ Top and we decided to try another version of the tune with a similiar groove. After getting to the Hive in Derby, Neil nailed the groove down and between us we came up with an old school T?-style middle eight. There’s also a ‘motown’ style rhythm guitar on the chorus, kind of Jackson 5 (I know, I know, bloody Jackson again) meets Afghan Whigs. We let rip with the Helmet influence on the intro.
This song’s got one of those grooves that means when we rehearse it we could play it for ages, it just feels (adopts comedy James Brown voice) “So damn good!”
Lyrically, it’s Underworld by DeLillo again and a bit of early 20th century philosophy thrown in for good measure. I think.

Lyrics
I could sleep for days
Given half the chance
But I'm not in dreamland now
Reality avalanche
In a way
I'm in waste-management
I cover shit up, cover shit up
Pretend it never happened
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
But I perish the thought
No idea is natural
We're born, we age, we die trying
Slowly rotting beneath the surface
Waiting to burst with rage
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
But I perish the thought
And I perish
I perish
The thought
And I perish
I perish
The thought
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
It could be worse
I could be you
I could be you
I could be you
I could be you
I could be you
