Deluded Son

Story Behind The Song by Andy Cairns (Mar 29th, 2006)

This deals with schizophrenia. Initially we had the Shellac style groove for the verses and we needed a huge, contrasting, chorus to turn it on its head. We looked to Hüsker Dü for inspiration on this one.

The harmonics on the guitar at the start of the track were originally played notes but it sounded too similiar to Screamager/Iron Maiden/Papa Roach so we made it more metallic and percussive instead.

The chorus is deliberately sunny and big. Regarding the vocal harmonies, as well as Hüsker Dü, we were listening a lot to Love’s ‘Forever Changes’ album during the making of this record. Always a good one for underlying malevolence in deceptively chirpy settings.

“Love is the longing for the half of ourselves we have lost” - Milan Kundera, ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’.

Lyrics

My little friend
I don’t understand
Where you begin
And where you end
I’ve seen you back and forth
And left to right
Always well within sight

I am the one
I am the one
I am the one
I am the one

Deluded son

I can collect
The world round my neck
All I have done
I was compelled
I’ve seen you back and forth
And left to right
Always well within sight

I am the one
I am the one
I am the one
I am the one

Deluded son

I am the one
I am the one
I am the one
I am the one

I am the one
I am the one
I am the one
I am the one

Deluded son
