Story Behind The Song by Andy Cairns (Mar 29th, 2006)

This is one of Michael’s riffs and when we heard it we loved it straight away. We wanted to try and capture the sense of anticipation when you’re waiting for something to happen, that metallic, adrenaline taste in your mouth when you’re anxious. Decided to keep the track pulsating and make sure the tempo was just right.

The chorus was a mix of Michael’s bass line and some Public Image Ltd. guitar line, circa ‘Metal Box’ that I was playing around with. The lyrics came one evening when I was stressed out but euphoric at the same time. It’s also about fighting back for your small chunk of the world.

The outro of the track was Neil’s idea. We were messing around with a little groove influenced by German band Can. Neil suggested the pushes and the notes. Like the The Dude’s carpet in the Big Lebowski, it tied up the (room) track nicely.

Lyrics

I’ve reached that point again
There’s decisions to be made
Prioritise and organise
Foundations for the future

Well I’ve seen it all before
Feels like a previous life
I got it wrong back then
This time I’ve got to get it right

They didn’t believe me then
They won’t believe me now
They won’t believe me
Anyhow

A fearless, reckless life
Can have consequences
But still I’d rather feel something
I’d rather take my chances

They didn’t believe me then
They won’t believe me now
They won’t believe me
Anyhow

They didn’t believe me then
They won’t believe me now
You’re on your own
Don’t take it lying down

Don’t take it lying down
Don’t take it lying down
Don’t take it lying down

Don’t take it lying down
Don’t take it lying down
Don’t take it lying down

They didn’t believe me then
They won’t believe me now
They won’t believe me
Anyhow

They didn’t believe me then
They won’t believe me now
You’re on your own
Don’t take it lying down
