Unconsoled

Story Behind The Song by Andy Cairns (Mar 29th, 2006)

This all started from one of Michael’s bass lines. We’d been living with it for a while and had tried to turn it into a song. One evening at the Hive in Derby we ran the tape and jammed it out. The drums had a really early jazz feel to them and the instruments and voice had an emotive quality that we liked.

After many attempts at trying to structure the song we found ourselves going back to the Hive version. In the end we stopped beating ourselves up over it and went with gut instinct.

Originally we tried to make the guitars a lot crisper and tight but we decided it was too much. In the end we went with a Neil Young/Godspeed! You Black Emperor vibe. The lyrics are a mid-life crisis on tape and were inspired by a chat with a friend of mine.

“I haven’t seen you for years but I think about you every day” - Ricky Warwick, Friend and Musician.

Lyrics

Honey, we’ve survived
Made it to the suburbs
Where lights are timed
And driveways clean

This is what I get
At the end of it
A house
Not a home

It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold

And unconsoled

I haven’t seen you for years
But I think about you
Everyday
Everyday

And I wonder why
If I’m meant to feel safe at night
I close my eyes
But I’m still awake

It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold

It leaves me unconsoled

It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold

It leaves me unconsoled

Unconsoled

It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold

It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold
It leaves me cold

It leaves me unconsoled
