House Share

#

Started by fatboy

Just wondering if any of you lot could help me out here.

For the last week I’ve been with two mates and all we’ve talked about was sharing a house. Sounds like we’re going to recreate scenes from the Young Ones I thought, but we just talked about it.

If I go ahead of this, then its a big step. I’ve always depended on my parents for everything because of my illness, made me feel safe and what have you.

Then there’s the thought of three mental health patients sharing this house, like what changes to our benefits and are they going to be affetcted. Will the DSS pay for our rate and will the housing people allow this, which is the big one.

If you’ve been in a house share, let us know. I’ll read the comments with interest.

I can’t help you out with DSS specifics, but is the place you’re thinking of moving to near your parents’ house? Is it a year long contract or month to month?

If it’s nearby and only a month to month contract I say go for it, you don’t have much to lose and can always float between the two houses. A lot like me :)

Providing all three of you are named on the tenancy agreement, you should all be able to claim separately with the DSS for housing benefit.

I have always found the problem to be that you need to live in a house before you can make a claim with the DSS… so you need to have some cash up front, or a very understanding landlord.

I’d also say don’t sign for anything longer than 6 months in the first instance… living with other people is hard! See how you get along when it’s a 24/7 situation, you can always extend the tenancy if everything works out :)

Cheers, I’ll bear this in mind. A part of me rather wants a flat to myself, but again, with my illness, that might not be possible.

I’d say give it a try, provided you have some back up in case it doesn’t work out. As Hooch said, living with other people in one house will get difficult at times, so prepare yourself for that and make sure (as far as possible) that your housemates are aware of that too. You will have to get used to other peoples anoying habits and they to yours, so keep that in mind.

So be realistic about the good and bad things and you’ll do fine :D

I would recommend sitting down beforehand and discussing things like cleaning and cooking and food purchase etc

Nothing gets more petty in a shared house than the old “Which bastard used my last piece of bread, I saved that for toast this morning…?!” routine.

And get a lock on your bedroom door that you can lock from both sides. Keeps your valuables safe whilst you are out and keeps your “valuables” safe from view when you are, ahem, “in”, let’s say…

Haha… I have to say I agree with Squall, though it’s not so much that one person is always a prick, rather than a group of people in a confined space over a prolonged period of time always need to have a scapegoat to blame for their misfortunes. Especially when copious amounts of drugs and alcohol are being consumed on a daily basis.

…thats a start you are making real progress here,
so did they do anything like take your milk or your cornflakes? Is this the cause of your tension or anxiety?
Perhaps you have found yourself in the toilet and it isn’t the Andrex puppy who has taken your bog-roll???

After you have got all that out of you system… breathe deep and think of happy things..like quilted double velvet.

Turn the heating up on full all day every day when i was the one paying the bills.

Altho - the best thing about that was - i knew they would never chip in so i didnt pay the bill for a few months - let them use as much water gas and electric as they wanted - then i moved out

Phone bills.

“Oh but I never use the phone”

OK, let’s go through the bill then.

“Wasn’t me, I don’t even know the number…”

best to stick with your own mobile and sod having a land line, which of course buggers up the idea of having broadband or owt like that.
