Because the new album is great ?

That’s what you say. The songs I’ve heard so far don’t convince me.

Dennis wrote:

I know the band will never do an album as vital or as important as their earlier work, but this album is much better than I had dared to hope. Hence I am now kicking myself for not getting tickets to their Wolverhampton gig. D’oh!

So the key to liking the album is the “Lowered Expectations”-approach? :p
Not really my kind of thing, I must admit.

@dennis: they played freedom of speech won’t feed my dyson the other week at a german festival.

Yup - here’s the setlist from rockpalast.de:
01. You Love Us
02. I’m Just A Patsy
03. You Stole The Sun From My Heart
04. Underdogs
05. Motorcycle Emptiness
06. Freedom Of Speech Won’t Feed My Children
07. Little Baby Nothing
08. Your Love Alone Is Not Enough
09. From Despair To Where
10. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
11. Send Away The Tigers
12. P.C.P.
13. Autumn Song
14. A Design For Life

(BTW - They filmed the setlist for a few seconds and there was “Enola/Alone” in brackets. Shame they decided not to play it. I might have forgiven them for the new crap then.)

That’s a fair comment, for sure.

I think a better way of me explaining myself would be to say that these are “good” songs rather than “great” songs.
But hey, they are still good songs.

Funny how the 2 singles off Lifeblood went top 3.

Yet, they bring out a decent rock and roll song and nobody buys it !

that was on downloads only, the physical sales will be counted in tomorrows chart. (it was released a week earlier as a download).

@ Taunty Dan: well, never of course. but it’d give radio 1 a kick up the arse if it got to number one. those fuckers didn’t even playlist it.

damn. pipped to the top by beyonce and shakira. oh well, it was a good try. i shall now revert back to my usual snobbish opinion of “oh, but the charts don’t matter anyway, who even listens/bothers with them blah blah”. because i am full of shit.

“Send Away The Tigers” isn’t a bad album, but IMO it’s the Manics’ worst album, yet. “Know Your Enemies” and “Lifeblood” had bad songs, but the good ones, which made up at least half of each of those album, were GREAT.

On “Send Away…” every song is average to nice at best: “Your Love Alone…”, “Autumnsong”, the title track… it’s all okay, but not as earth shattering as the Manics and also JDB solo used to be just a few years/months ago (yes, a FEW years, you don’t have to go back to “The Holy Bible” to find brilliance in their music!).

Anyway, this new album sounds as if they were trying too hard. Trying to get back to something that’s just not there anymore. A really bad move, especially since they make out their previous attempts to constantly grow as some sort of mistake. The real mistake is that they listened to all the nay-sayers and made a really lukewarm (and way too short) album trying to meet somebody else’s expectations.

Personally I think this album sounds a lot less like they are trying too hard, compared to ‘Lifeblood’, not more.

A poor album IMHO :(

There’s a couple of ‘good’ tracks, nothing great and some real duffers! There’s stuff on the Lipstick collection that are far better than some of the songs served up here. Your Love Alone is dreadful. I even turned off the radio this morning when it was played!

Can’t be bothered going into any more details on this one. I don’t like it and after repeated listens I don’t thnk I ever will!

Disappointed!

Some great songs were missed off LIpstick Traces, I think.

If they had seriously collected all of their best b-sides/ rareties, it would have been second only to The Holy Bible as their best album.

Easily better than Lifeblood and TIMTTMY methinks. The Second Great Depression and Imperial Bodybags definetly my favourites from the Album. Looks like Manics seem to be going back to what they’re best at. Solo’s and catchy songs.

I for one can’t wait till Monday to see them. Shame it’s in Glasgow… :(

I went to see the Manics the other night. I don’t mean to be a cynical fucker but i think i must just have outgrown them. The audience was made up of fat, balding businessmen - there were no cool people there at all! That killed it stone dead for me, even though they played loads of cool shit like Yes, Born To End and Condemned to rock n roll.

Bye Manics - thanks for being the soundtrack to my growing up - enjoy your senility! :p

Well said, that Squall. So Why So Sad in particular was just JdB playing at writing Beach Boys songs, yeuch.
