Both of those were better than the latest single, which is cheesy and annoying beyond belief. At least ‘So Why So Sad’ recognised that they couldn’t pull off the old magic and was trying something in a different style.

I don’t agree, I think SWSS was cheesy beyond belief - and made all the worse by the fact that it came out the same day as Found That Soul, which I thought was an excellent song, which got completely overshadowed.
On Love of Richard Nixon, James just sounds bored, though I do like it.
I think the new song sounds more vibrant, alive than they have for a while, and whilst it is a bit naff in some ways, in other ways it’s catchy pop.
I think it says it all about the dilemma the band are in that Underdogs was released as a free download via the webset yet YLAINE is the first single proper - by far the more likely to appeal to the post-EMG fans. Underdogs at least has some of their old bite.

It sounds like a band going for the (early) New Order kind of detached/electronic/cold/austere sound, which is ok up to a point, but it is difficult to emotionally connect with an album that has been deliberately written in such a way.
So Why So Sad, I maintain, is one of the very lowest points of the Manics’ career. A truly dire single.

Dire is much too nice a word for that song. That was the beginning of the end of my Manics-love.
However - I’ve heard some more songs from SATT now and they weren’t all that bad.

That helps to explain why they’ve gone so far down the cheesiness route. Love’s Sweet Exile is by no means a classic, but not at all a bad song. Plus the lyrics far outshine anything Wire has written for the last 10 years. If they dislike their early stuff, when they had drive and energy, there’s no wonder they’ve sunk so far.

Thoughts ?
For the record I like all their albums, including KYE and Lifeblood. I liked LifeBlood immediately and still do.
But Send Away The Tigers, for me is the best album since EMG.

I wonder if Wire’s view is biased by the fact that he had so much involvement in EMG compared to previous efforts.
It was certainly a strong period for the band but to say the album is their best is a bit too flattering when you consider songs like The Girl Who Wanted To Be God.
Bradfield seems to suggest that the Holy Bible was their best moment, on the Holy Bible DVD, which I would have to agree with 100%
In terms of the look, sound, lyrics - the complete package, the Holy Bible was the time in their career that I prefer.

I prefer to think of it in years - and 93 to 98 were their trump years, Gold, Bible and EMG were all great. My Truth, not so good but they finally got to make some decent money so fair fucks to em.
They are good again now so we should be happy for that!

i have to agree with you there. the crowd was a bit rubbish. also, i think i may have outgrown them now aswell. i mean, it was a great gig, great set etc but it just seemed a bit flat. probably though this is mainly due to the fact that it was the manics and in my mind i still kind of expect them to be the most exciting band i’ve ever seen every time i see them. if it were any other band who’d played that gig, i’d be saying “great, fantastic, blinder” etc. but as it was i just haven’t thought about it much since tuesday. meh. i must be getting old.

Seen them be fantastic, seen them be average, seen them be “hmm, quite good, I suppose..”.
I remember saying pretty much what you say above after the EMG tour, but I thought they were storming at Wolverhampton on the Lifeblood tour, despite the fact that it was the, um, Lifeblood tour!

this was my tenth manics gig and, as i say, although it was “good”, it was probably the worst i’ve seen them.
and goddammit, we didn’t get sleepflower but the next night in leeds they played it. arse.

I thought Wire hated “The Everlasting” the most.
Well, anyway…
Although I initially didn’t care about “Lifeblood” at all, I just can’t see now how so many people dislike it. It’s a quiet, introspective album, get over it. Some of their most beautiful songs are on there!

I’m a bit sceptical. I got to know the Manics because of the singles from EMG, remained a fan for the next few years. I liked Know your enemy a lot. Next; they cancel their European tour, because their record company told them to write and record new songs for a best of, because KYE didn’t sell. Lifeblood, for me, was a big disappointment. I was planning on not buying this new record or going to see them in Amsterdam (I still have never seen them live).
I can imagine people saying in a few months “you know, SATT wasn’t that good after all”, because they mereley hope and want it to be.
Is it really good?

yep i agree. i have already changed my mind. a whole 6 days after the album officially came out. it’s good, infact it’s very good, but for me the live thing was what it was always about. and now they’ve just become “another” live band who are quite good but nothing spectacular as they used to be. it used to be a huge event on my calendar when i saw the manics. after this weeks gig, it’s just another thing to do rather than watch the telly or go to sleep.

Because, in my opinion, Manics fans try to make themselves like recent albums. I’m not knocking anyone, cos i’m a fan myself, but i just don’t kid myself! I know that if “motorcycle emptiness” or “you love us” comes on in a club i’m gonna go mental, but if “Your love alone” came on i probably wouldn’t even notice.

Thats what happened to me! Only i’ve got over it and refuse to buy stuff now just cos it has the Manics name on it, and i really don’t care for the new album even though I like what i’ve heard - Patsy and Autumn Song are alright.
Re the live thing - i’m glad i’m not the only one who thinks that! I really wanted to get into it but despite a great setlist it all seemed a bit forced and cabaret.
And to be fair to squall, yes those songs ARE good on Lifeblood but …Richard Nixon (the comeback single remember?) was absolute monkey sweat and Emily is one of their worst ever songs! It gets a 4/10 from me that album for being so dreary. I noticed they didn’t play ONE song off it live this time round - has anyone seen t hem play anything off it yet this tour?
