i think the idea of putting out a duet is to just try and get some cardigans fans (i believe there are some) to buy the single. i just listened to it again and it’s awful. embarassingly awful. fucking wire.

“fucking Wire” indeed! :D

The worst thing is how he talks such a great game but then fails to deliver.

Apparently, Underdogs sounds like “something off the second side of Appetite For Destruction…Nightrain or Raocket Queen”.

EH?! Does it heck as like!

The Manics have been doing this for about 11 years now!

@notthatkindofguy - i’ll be at cambridge. Lets meet up - i’ve never met a fellow WOM before!

I am looking forward to the new album. I actually really liked Lifeblood and Know Your Enemy was pretty good too ( in my opinion. )

For me, the worst album they’ve done so far is This is My Truth, Can I Get You A Pillow ?

this is my truth is their worst but, still good tho.

i just have this image of wire sitting down and thinking “hmmm, if i include words like fuck and freaks in a song, maybe people will pay attention”.

james should go solo. i managed to bullshit my way through the last two albums being rubbish but from the two tracks i’ve heard from send away the tigers (and there’s only ten on it), i think the manics ship is one i am going to have to avoid from now on.

i wouldn’t mind if this was just some band that i was a casual listener to but i’m actually really pissed off about how bad they have become. basically i’ve spent the last ten years saying “oh, but the next album will be better”.

and with that, i have finally reached my 1000th post. do i get a prize?

well done dude, ur prize is ‘send away the tigers’ by the manics :D

fair enough its ur opinion, i for one am glad that the distorted guitars are back, underdogs is a class tune, and james’ voice sounds stronger than ever, and seans drumming is useful now, on lifeblood he hardly did fuck all.

don’t get me wrong here. i absolutely adore the manics. i have spent my entire adult life telling everyone how great they are. the first five albums will always be amongst my favourite albums ever (TIMTTMY however primarily because of the b sides).

and of course, anyone who know’s anything about me would tell you that the holy bible is the best album ever by anyone. fact.

i can’t wait to see them live again. on the past/present/future tour they were amazing.

The Manics had better be good on this tour. Fromn their press releases it sounds like they are clutching at the last fragments of cred and this could be the last chance to deliver.

Mansun deserved better from the English press and music fans, they would still be around today if people weren’t so hostile to them, they had some crackin tunes.

A description of the new album in their own words (from the Manics’ website):

SEND AWAY THE TIGERS
Musically - ‘All You Need Is Love’ played by Guns ‘n’ Roses. The decline of the two Tony’s - Blair and Hancock, the zoo in Baghdad, a symbol of misguided liberation releasing horror and animal instinct - the idea of being haunted by decisions forever. When politics work it is usually a compromise. Hancock described his alcoholic demons with the phrase ‘Send Away The Tigers’

UNDERDOGS
All out punk metal - Alice Cooper - Stooges guitar outro
Could have been on Generation Terrorists. A celebration of the unique, a post ‘Everything Must Go’ address to the fans 10 years after the first time we did it. In a Britain dominated by generic, one dimensional multi branding, let us embrace the difference - the downtrodden - the losers and the opposition. Let us fall in love with individuality again

YOUR LOVE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
Keith Moon drums, Pete Townsend power cords, sonically similar to Hole’s ‘Celebrity Skin’ - ‘Everything Must Go’ era - euphoric rock. Written as a duet with Nina Perrson (Cardigans) in mind - lyrically a two-way conversation in my head about love - religion - democracy and Richey.

INDIAN SUMMER
Musically a minor cord companion piece to a ‘Design For Life’, uplifting melancholia
All most Napoleonic - the final throw of the dice - Jimmy from Quadrophina staring over the cliff - youthful idealism gone sour but hope for the future by appreciating the past.

THE SECOND GREAT DEPRESSION
Musically - ‘How Soon Is Now’ but played by The Smashing Pumpkins with ELO harmonies - friendship, desire and determination, paralysed by the disaster of UK and USA foreign policy

RENDITION
A modern day take on Jeff Beck’s ‘Bolero’ and The Clash’s ‘Tommy Gun’, militaristic Skids guitars with ‘Love Removal Machine’ drums - the idea of airspace or Guantanamo Bay being above or outside the law - Jack Lemmon used as a symbol of the America we once respected - humble talented intellectual and engaged

AUTUMNSONG
Classic coming of age punk ballad - Aerosmith’s ‘I See You Crying’, ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ guitars and The Ramones doing ‘Baby I Love You’. The power of your first feelings love - hate - confusion - feeling bullet proof, your first kiss - your first fight - your first drink of alcohol. The power of naive idealism

I AM JUST A PATSY
A real guilty pleasure 70’s American rock, Mercury Rev’s ‘Goddess On A Highway’ played by Boston. The conceit and desire of fame - the need for conspiracies
The inability of the human race to deal with boredom and mundane truths

IMPERIAL BODYBAGS
‘Brand New Cadillac’ - ‘Stray Cat Strut’ - over the top Jeff Beck guitar solo - the demonisation of American people projecting their leaders inadequacies on to a whole country - one evil replaced by another - seduction through imagery not fact

WINTERLOVERS
Big Mott the Hoople chorus - Ronnie Lane bass solo - reconnection between yourself and your mental and your environmental landscape - Radio Ga Ga breakdown - Paradise City backing vocals

Note to band: Army-style jacket and backwards R’s in artwork do not make your new songs as good as The Holy Bible, so don’t kid yourselves!
