Kirk may see it as the zeitgeist influencing his playing, but for me the real reason that he finds himself playing music that doesn’t come from within is that JAMES TELLS HIM WHAT TO PLAY!

Why I think the new album will be good.

1.Rick Rubin producing.

2.They’ve been writing it since summer 2003 - not ” go in the studio - press record and start playing ”

3.They’re picking the best ideas out of over 50 cd’s worth of riffs and jams and making songs out of them.

4.They’re spending the first few days of recording getting each instrument to sounds as good as possible - rather than spend 5 minutes placing mikes wherever.

5.They realise St Anger was a mistake and have said themselves that they ” want to make the new album as good as it can be,” and not rush it.

It may still suck, but I’m feeling positive.

Don’t really see what is so new with the “indian” sound/vibe to Metallica.

Wherever I may Roam had the same kind of feel and all of Kirks wah guitar solos also.

As long as the man lays down some solos this time around - St. Anger was rubbish.

I am definitely going to listen to this one before buying - made a mistake not doing so with the last 3. They are already trying to sell by saying stuff like they had a “puppets” vibe in the studio…

All I can say is, if Rick Rubin can’t manage to lift these guys out of the depths to which they have sunken, they might as well quit or just stay a touring band.

Megadeth whoops their asses any day of the week anyways :D

Load was a good album. Reload had some quality songs on it.

St Anger was a failed experiment.

This one needs to be awesome just to make up for about 10 years of dodgy reocrds.

Them saying they have a ‘puppets vibe’. Metallica have never compared themselves to their glorious past before, to do it now smacks of a lack of genius.

out why they released it.

The started saying stuff like that after they toured the puppets album last year.

I loved that album, but what annoys me is that they were giving out about fans during the Load period as they were crying for them to go back to the Puppets type era.

Lars at the time just said that they would never go back to that and that the fans should grow up.

seems a bit hyptocritical to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Metallica as such, just feel that they lost their magic a long time ago.

You used to have 3 strong creative forces in the band (Hetfield, Burton and Mustaine) and now only one remains.

No idea whether rob is a good writer or not.

No doubt that he would write bass hooks, but not sure how much he contributed suicidal tendencies or infectious groove tunes.

The problem with Metallica was that Lars and Hetfield are control freaks and wouldn’t let the others contribute.

I hope you at least get to hear the bass properly - dunno, is it just me or do they always seem to have the bass hidden by the guitars?

Check out the writing credits for ” The New Song ”

the bass on most metal records is rubbish as far as i’m concerned. The bass players just play exactly the same as the guitarist then it gets mixed right in so you can’t hear it anyway.
Jason Newsted was the worst offender for this - his basslines were crap.

Come on metal bassists - lets hear some invention!

What is REALLY funny though is that over on the metallica message boards - there is a thread ” Name teh new Metallica Album ” and almost every single sugestion is a re-hash of a previous album or song title.

:D Metallica fans are hilarious some times.

The bass player from Mudvayne kicks ass. Generally I would have to agree with you, but there are a few exceptions to the rule. At least with alot of the other thrash bands (jeez, could one still refer to Metallica as that?) you can hear the bass loud and clear. With Metallica you get the impression that they don’t regard it as important.

I think the 40 quid will be legit, that is one thing you have to hand to Metallica, concert tickets are always priced fairly.

I doubt it. Rob has seemed to be content with being a hired hand for years (Ozzys band, Jerry Cantrells band)… I guess he fits right into Metallica.

I really hope Rob T gets to show off some of his bassing and writing skills on this record, he is awesome. It would be a shame to waste his talents i think whoever it was was right when they said they don’t regard the bass as vwery important.

I think a lot of bands, metal bands in particular, fall into that trap. For example, anyone know if Tom Araya is a good bassist? No idea meself, can’t hear a note of what he plays!

Bass can do so much more than just root notes. OK not everyone is an Ozzy fan, but a good example is No More Tears - great bass intro, something different from the run of the mill plodding of some bassists (Def Leppard hang your heads in shame. Again.)

Listen to Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Overkill etc. Bass is clearly audible in those recordings.

“and justice for all” sounds like there was no bass guitar whatsoever.

don’t shoot me for this but Fieldy from korn is at least very different. His slap technique is shoddy but tuning your bass down lower than a chav’s morals and hitting it percussively in time is unique.

If anyone has heard ‘I Can Remember’ the b-side to Got the Life - check it out, i’d love to be able to write a cool riff like that then attach it to a descending hip hop line for the second verse. very clever.

So if someone just slaps the bass strings that does it for you?

Funny enough, when Korn first came out I also admired the sound, but he does it every bloody song. Gets kinda old after a while.

At the end of the day, you can’t have all musicians in a band playing virtuoso at the same time, coz it sounds like a mess.

At the end of the day, I know it is cool when bass players let rip, but it is even more important that they compliment the drummer to keep the sound tight IMO.
