Slight correction,
They claim to be going back to being Metal giants - or do you mean St. Anger? I hope not.
Remember, St. Anger was also hyped by the little troll as being a return to form - he lied then also.
Listen, I am not buying into anything until I hear this new album, as far as I am concerned they are still a bunch of washed up sell outs that live off their past glories.
They are however still great live - I will not argue against that.
You want to see Metal Giants, check out Megadeth. Musicianship that destroys Metallica.

Metallica’s problem is that once they were ahead of the pack and now they are playing catch up. It happens to a lot of bands that hang around for a long time, but you can either stick to what you do and watch it drift in and out of fashion (e.g. Iron Maiden) or you can constantly change and experiment (e.g. David Bowie).
Problem is, if you stick to one sound for years and years, and then decide to change and experiment, it smacks of desperation.

Now Kirk is bigging up the new LP.
” Its the best album we’ve done for 15 years. Heavy, really fast, the guitars are tuned back up to E Standard. james sounds like he did in the 80’s again. - Its what our 6th album should have been. ”
Everyone will say ” thats what he said about st anger ” but if memory serves - the only thing I remember said about st anger was ” it was really agressive and more like justice on account of the length of songs ”
I never heard anyone say St Anger was a return to form.

Maybe ‘tallica is coming out with a melodic trash album (that’s what I wished for St. Anger). Trash is the best thing they can do. And nothing else matters. ;)

St Anger was a good argument for the fact that you should only write music when you are inspired, when you have something to say or express and NOT just cos, well, we should do an album, been a while since the last one…etc

For me if a band has to really struggle to write/record an album then why do it? Metallica could crawl out of the wodwork every couple of years and do a decent tour with the songs they already have, so why struggle to put out yet more mediocre ones? I don’t understand why people are even talking about them to be honest.

I think St Anger (although it went wrong commercially) was the only album they could have made at that time. They were letting people get inside a period of their lives, not just making an album. I’d rather be happy doing what I like and having no-one like me, than try and please others. I know from experience that no-one will give a fuck!!

After 5 albums whcih people regard as classics, two albums which were perfectly fine in their own right and one album which was a mess but still not as bad as people make out…
:) Its like saying why does Megadeth carry on ?
Why shouldnt they ? :D
The Rolling Stones on the other hand…:o

You seem to be missing the point,
The problem is that Lar$ is a two-faced lying douchebag. This is the same guy who during the Load era told fans of classic Metallica to grow up and that they would never play that type of music again - i.e. mocked those who helped him get where he is today.
St. Anger was hyped as a “return to form” - what a fucking lie, and now this new one has a “Puppets vibe”. Seems like they have realised that there is not market for the 3 - not 1, pile of crap albums that are there most previous releases - it has been over 10 years since they have done anything worth mentioning, let alone metal
Megadeths low point was “Risk”, after that Dave Mustaine said “fuck this” and said that he was going back to thrash metal again - he, unlike the little troll, kept his word - check out United Abominations - Metallica can only dream of creating something that comes close by this point.
Who do Metallica have to save them when it comes to song writing - no more Burton, no more Mustaine, only Hetfield. Kind of a coincidence that this band started running out of ideas after Justice???

Mustaine writes better riffs and more poetic lyrics AND has better song arrangements but is very blinkered in his views. Megadeth have beeen out of date for some time now - Metallica made the Load albums and got a whole new fanbase while Megadeth plodded along - and Risk is one of the worst rock albums ever created - far crapper than St Anger IMO.

A fan base of EMO kids and Nu-Metal heads - big whoop.
I am looking forward to seeing the “out of date band” play a sold out gig next weekend in Dublin.

ps there’s no need to take it personally… I was being nice about megadeth, i just mentioned the fact that they’ve been doing an Iron Maiden and stuck to the same formula. I even had a ticket to go see them in London in a couple o weeks but can’t make it which i’m a bit annoyed about.

Hi There,
I am not taking it personally - I will however admit that Metallica in general just pisses me off of late. I guess seeing the some kind of monster movie just made me realise what a twat Lar Ulrich is.
Nu Metal was started by Korn, and as far as I am aware both them and the Deftones had albums out in the mid-90’s.
I remember the time, and general masses jumped on the band wagon calling Load and Re-Load metal.
It eventually inspired Metallica to have no Guitar solos, like on St. Anger.
I am a big fan of thrash metal, Megadeth currently falls into that category, Metallica haven’t since Justice.
Point taken though.

I loved the song St Anger, but the album was rubbish.
On their website, it says something about their new recordings along the lines of “Lars has remembered to put the snare on his snare drum and Kirk has recorded guitar solos!”
Sad to see a band back-pedalling like that in an attempt to get back on-side with fans.
As for thrash, I think they should leave that to Slayer and head back towards a Black album-era sound. I think that is what Metallica could do best now. Not to say it is the best they have ever done, but with what they have left in the tank, I think Black Album style music is the one thing they could still pull off.
