Well Load/reload was sort of a double… with some very heavy clearing of the chaff, it would have made really good one.

But double albums in general I can only think of one that doesn’t need trimming and that is Physical Graffiti. The new RHCP album is albout fifteen songs too long same with the smashing pumkins, SOAD’s albums could have made one great one. I love the white album by the beatles but that could have been halved in all honesty. It’s great that a band are creative enough to write enough for a double… but don’t be so arrogent/ignorant to think that every song is amazing..pick the good ones for FUCKS SAKE!!!

What you said.

*nods in agreement*

Back in the days when a band could fit 8 or 9 reasonably-sized songs onto a vinyl record, fair play that some chose to expand it into a double - but that would only be the equivalent of a single CD now.

I have numerous CD’s in my collection that are 13, 14 tracks long and should have been trimmed down to 10.
God only knows why anyone would want or need 25 plus songs from the same band in one sitting, nice as it is to get new material from a band you love.

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile

Now there is a good double disc.

As for Metallica doing one, let us hope that Lars does not visit WOM and get more silly ideas into his head!

Jerry Cantrell’s Degradation Trip - the 2CD version and not the trimmed down Road runner release is a fantastic double CD!

nope, there is absolutely NO bass at all.

metallica were being presseured with the cd, and jason newstead knew all the parts but was unable to record them as they were pressured with the cds release, fact.

seeing as everyones doing this i might as well do it:

kill em all - good
ride the lighning - good
master of puppets - classic
justice - brilliant
black - very good
load - good
reload - good
garage inc - good
s&m - brilliant
st anger - very good

Graeme, bless you mate but it is not a “fact” that there is no bass guitar recorded on ..And Justice For All!
It is just a really bad mix.

There is bass on it just turned down. It has been admitted by various band members at various times. Read The Truth About Metallica, it has quotes in there.

You’re wrong James and Lars co-produced the album so they put there insturments up really loud and because Newsted was only new in the band he didn’t want to cause any hassle plus they never took Newsted seriously that’s one of the reasons he left the band.

Of course there is bass on that album… and if you know one end of one from the other then you can hear it on the album (if you listen really hard…)

lol, i aint listened to the album in a while so i think ill start listening a bit more.

do u think maybe, just maybe, all the bass sounds might be coming from the guitars, im just saying, im just looking at all the possibilities here.

I’ve been playing bass for 12 years so I kinda know what I am talking about and can kinda pick the sound out (plus when I was 16-17 I learned most of the songs off that album).

I have a fucking kick-arse stereo, Trust me ;)

If you’re talking about AJFA then i can hear the bass… the song “One” is a clear example where it is audible.

EDIT: thrash and music like that, has the bass lock in with the guitars so are never going to be playing anything too off from the main riffs, which wont help seperation.

If you dont believe me listen again. The bass lines for the album are pretty boring, for most of the time it is playing the root note of the rhythm guitar… but in the few rare times where it doesn’t.. if you listen very carefully, you can hear it.

If you are listening to a compressed mp3 file through shitty pc speakers, you aint gonna be able to tell the difference between shit and chocolate… so stick the cd on.

If you still dont believe me, watch the ‘year and a half…’ or SKOM… you will see how long those anal bastards spend making a record - they are hardly likely to turn round at the last minute and go “hang on, on second thoughts, just release it without the bass tracks…”

I heard James and Lars mixed and prouduced it, but they made such a mess of it, everyone wanting to be loudest, they got Flemming in to save what he could of it !!!

It was a bit of both as far as I remember, Mike Clink did start the sessions but I think there was a bit of a clash between producer and the two big egos. The only bits kept from these sessions were a few drum tracks as credited on the album. Another fact that Lars only admitted resently is that when he played drums on Dyers Eve he couldn’t keep up the pace so they slowed the tape down by 10bpm and he played to that and corrected the speed and pitch later.. the big gay!

Oh yeah..AFD by GNR rules!
