Most thought provoking film that you’ve seen

#

Started by The Auto Surgeon (Mark)

This is one for you to think about, as I would like to know what film people found the most thought provoking - you don’t have to have necessarily liked it, just the one that made you think about the story line the most.

For me it has to be one that I’ve seen in the last few months - Hard Candy. I didn’t know which way my head was thinking when I watched it.

Mullholland Drive - still til today wonder what the fuck that film was about…

Other films would be crash (not the oscar winning one), Naked lunch, Fear and loathing in las vagas, a clockwork orange…

The list goes on and on…

Crash would agree with (there seems to a be a James Spader appreciation society outing today). Try watching Fear & Loathing … whilst slowly getting more & more drunk - that was a fun evening!!
Naked Lunch - Videodrome got me thinking more, but can’t say that it didn’t get me thinking. “Clockwork” didn’t really do anything for me.

I watched Fear & Loathing Sober early during the day - it was a scary experience - that film has to be appreciated with some mind expanding substance I think.

Ah, Clockwork Orange was class - “singing in the rain” has never been the same for me since…

I read and watched Clockwork Orange and that was quite thought provoking. Though not only the concept of the Goverment turning us into, ‘Clockwork Oranges’, but also the various rapes and murders in the movie (and book, since the movie deviates from the storyline slightly)

If anyone says Donnie Darko I think I’ll choke. People seem to believe theres ‘a lot’ to that movie when there really isnt.

Theres tonnes of thought provoking movies.. I dont think I can pick any in particular, though:

Fear and Loathing
Fight Club
Scopophobia.. nah just kidding I havent even seen it :P

Actual thought provoking stuff… I like stuff that questions your beliefs and values like The Cider House Rules and Murder In The First.

Hotel Rwanda

This is based on a true story. It’s a film about the civil war between the hutu’s and the tutsi’s in Rwanda. If even half of it was true, it must have been hell

‘Happiness’

Deeply disturbing on so many levels, but ‘thought-provoking’ doesn’t begin to describe it …

Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a great film. I’m just not sure i could ever watch it again.

Also ‘Parents’

That provoked my thoughts sufficiently that I had recurring nightmares about it until I forced myself to watch it a second time :S

Watership Down.

I mean, you never really think about life from the perspective of a rabbit, do you, until you are confronted with a documentary like this.

Schindler’s List may be an obvious choice, but if that doesn’t make you think, you are ill.

Also Downfall, about Hitler’s last days. And Saving Private Ryan had some pretty thought-provoking scenes. And also made for numerous great puns on the title.

Children of Men was another film I found really thought provoking. Every woman in the world infertile? The youngest person alive had just been killed when he was 18. Just imagine that no-one under the age of about 20 had ever even seen a pregnant womam, let alone a new baby. Even down to the “Quietus” suicide kits. A really bleak vision of the future.

I agree with you there.
Schlindler was possibly the greatest man that ever lived simply for saving so many lives.
I watched a bit of Downfall on a plane, you know on one of those TV screens fitted into a seat, a very interresting film.
Saving Private Ryan confused me a bit the first time I watched it (don’t ask why) but it’s not really thought provoking…

Ohh i forgot, the writer, director and main actor is From Chile, like me :D

Irreversible, another good film, very raw and intense.

Don’t panic mate - when your sober you’ll realise that “it’s a piece o’ shit”.

Jubilee - now I didn’t get hardly any of that film.
