Monster Magnet

I know there are some people on the WoM who dig monster magnet. If you haven’t allready heard it, here’s some news that blabbermouth.net has:

MONSTER MAGNET frontman Dave Wyndorf has returned to the studio with producer Matt Hyde to resume work on the band’s new album.

Wyndorf was forced to halt work on the CD in February 2006 after overdosing on prescription drugs.

Hyde, who worked with MONSTER MAGNET on their “Powertrip” and “God Says No” releases, stated about the band’s new CD back in March 2006, “I believe it has the potential to be their best record since ‘Powertrip’.”

MONSTER MAGNET’s last studio album, “Monolithic Baby”, was released in 2004 via SPV.

i’m in 2 minds about monster magnet. Everything up to Superjudge was fucking ace, superjudge itself being one of my favorite albums, but everything after has been pretty poor. Still, glad Daves got his act together.

The last one was really poor, I cant remember a single song off it…

Saw em at the Big Day Out in Milton Keynes and they were really good… Dave setting fire to his guitar and some of the stage and all :) rock n roll!

great news. Hope the album doesn’t suck. Must say I kinda liked monolithic baby. It had a few good sing a long footstomping airguitar rockarolla’s. But classic Magnet it wasn’t. The fact that it contains two coversongs always worried me, let’s hope dave got enough time to chew on his ideas in detox so that we have a lot of originals that will stand the test of time.

well and if it sucks after all. too bad. We got Clutch, Hidden Hand, Fu Manchu that have already saved the year for yankee hard rock.

I don’t find Ronalds comment totally random. Apparently Monster Magnet are done with recording a new album for a 2010 release - that’s at least what I gathered from blabbermouth. I can’t understand why you wouldn’t create some buzz to get some attention for your new album.

On another note I saw them live once (that was before Dave Wyndorfs pill-induced health problems) and wasn’t too convinced either - solid rock entertainment with all the poses you’d expect from MM, but nothing more. Some 3 years later they had a new album out and toured again. Back then I was gutted that I couldn’t make it to the gig, as I expected them to play a couple of songs of their latest album 4 Way Diablo, which has some kick ass songs on it. I wasn’t gutted anymore when I saw the setlist for the tour: They played the exact same set as 3 years before, not even one new song in it. The only difference was Dave’s appearence - nowadays he’s twice the size he was before his breakdown.

Still I hope to hear some great new music by them later this year.

Yeah,

The singer seemed to be a good performer and all, but the rest of the band were lifeless on stage. Still think that their music is pretty decent though, just wouldn’t be my favs.

I love the Spine of God album, in fact I really like all their stuff up to Powertrip - they’ve kinda put out really average albums since. I thought the monolithic one was pretty poor in particular.

I think that up to 1998’s Powertrip, the band was leading the so called stoner movement. Indeed that is true.

Afterwards all the albums are been average rated. I assume that it has to do with Wyndorf’s addictions.
Saw them twice in Greece, the first time they ever played back in 1999 as support band to Metallica, and the second time was last year @ Rockwave Festival as co headliners. Both of the times were great!

I’ve just read the thread back and realised I’ve posted pretty much the same post twice, just 3 years apart.

Seems like a good time to recount the time I saw them at the Milton Keynes bowl where dave set fire to his guitar, which was quite rock n roll (don’t you know). I shall also mention that the Monolithic Baby album failed to live upto my expectations :)

God I’m tedious
