We all have favourites, those that we hate and those that no-one else seems to remember but you - So what are they?

I was a TV addict - The Smurfs to Transformers, The Wuzzels to Pole Position then onto Nightmare (good old Treguard).

I’ve told you some of mine, they could even have been ones that you watch/ed with your kids.

In no particular order:

Mr Benn, Captain Pugwash, Dogtanian and the 3 muskehounds, Ulysses, The Tomorrow People, Art Attack and a thing which I think was called Survivors but no-one remembers it - it had fantastic theme music and it was about a load of people who survived some catastrophe like a plague or something and they were the only people left in the country. The main character was a girl with long hair.

edit: Ooh yes, Dangermouse!! He was ace. And so was Top Cat, and the Pink Panther :)

Dangermouse is classic. Two people coming to their peak doing the voices - Terry Scott & Sir David Jason.

The only badly dubbed thing I can remember was “the boy who sold his smile” or something daft like that.

Famously misleading - never a real character. It’s like the belief that the magic roundabout characters are all drug’s!

Yes and no :) Yes, that’s what people say - and no, it wasn’t true. ‘Master Bates’ and ‘Roger the Cabin boy’ were made up too …

You mean the one that was set in space?!? I remember that - I used to rush home to make sure that I didn’t miss it.

Battle of the Planets - Mark, Jason, Princess, Tiny & Keyop - “Go Planet”!

And not forgetting Thundercats.

It has also been suggested that the pronunciation of “Master Mate” was slurred at times thanks to Pugwash’s rather nasal voice, and some people could mishear it. Popular industry screenwriting website Scriptmania, presenting a feature on UK Children’s television, have produced a soundbite which they claim is taken directly from an episode of the show, containing the words “I certainly did, Master Mate”, which can be heard here: - Click this link.

There may even be a sly reference to the myth in the title of the DVD of the computer animated series Captain Pugwash - Sticky Moments And Other Swashbuckling Adventures.

Nevertheless, it should be stressed that the characters’ names were Master Mate, Tom the cabin boy, and pirates Barnabas and Willy,

In The Onedin Line, a very popular BBC television programme in the 1970s, the ship’s mate was called “Mister Baines”, which in some people’s minds could become merged with “Master Mate” to create “Master Bates”, and Charles Dickens regularly refers to The Artful Dodger’s accomplice Charley Bates as “Master Bates” in the literary classic Oliver Twist.
