Broadband providers

AOL appear to be charging me a fortune for a fairly bog standard service and lots ‘content’ that I don’t really need.

What’s the best alternative?

I signed up with NTL which has turned into Virgin Media now - I’ve been with them for over two years and have never had a single problem (on the downside, this means I can’t tell you if their customer service is any cop). Nonetheless, they’re doing deals at the moment which you can read about here :)

PIPEX have been pretty good to me after a few initial problems. I get 8MB unlimited broadband for £33/month. The haven’t even taken any money off me since October 06!!!

Virgin Media doesn’t like me. I’ve tried phoning their customer service, can be good, depending on who you speak to.
I can get on Xbox Live but can’t seem to get on my normal tinterweb via USB port.
Bloody awful!

I’ve been with NTL / Virgin Media for years too, and I have to say on the whole I’m very satisfied with them. They do other deals apart from the ones Sarah linked to too - eg you can get Broadband, Mobile (100 mins + 100 texts I think) and Landline (all uk calls) for £30 per month.

@Colin - they can be really weird though if you are not the person named on the bill. I paid to have a phone installed in my bloke’s flat a few years back. If he wants to get rid of anything or query a bill or then they always say they have to speak to me, because it’s my name on the bill (even though I don’t live there) and yet if he wants to get digital TV and add 15 packages and broadband they always say they can do it without contacting me at all

Just ensure what ever package you go for is ‘unlimited’ in terms of downloads/bandwidth per month, or you may get stung for additional charges on top of your standard package/deal.

In my experience Tiscali is pretty good - I’ve setup broadband connections for quite a few friends/family with Tiscali at my recommendation and they’ve had no problems. Although should you have problems bare in mind their customer support is based in India - but who’s insn’t these days.

Avoid BT, especially the BT HomeHub - cheap piece of shit.

AOL’s support is based all over the place, or else there’s a hell of a lot of ex-pats in India - over the course of one day I spoke to several Indians, an Irishman, what was, I think, some type of South American and at least one total wanker.

Was about to go for the phone/TV/internet deal with Virgin when the Sky thing blew up - I’m fairly sure we’d go with them if I could still see 24 & Lost. For obscure reasons we get some extra channels and Sky was one of them, but not many.

I keep having to reset my modem with Virgin Media and it’s pissing me off. I know for a fact the router is fine and so is the cabling but it keeps stopping.

I’ve had my Virgin Media (well, NTL) modem for nearly 2 years and it has never stopped, or had any problems at all. You should get them to replace yours, it sounds very dodgy to me.

Could be a synchronisation problem between your router and your exchange, if you go to the BT web site theres an option to do a line test on your telephone line. Try that and report any faults to BT, otherwise do you have another telephone point in the house you could try the router in, are the filters plugged into all items such as Sky box, Telephones etc?

Title: Mice

On a side note related to all this here techynerd stuff. I live on a laptop with one of those annoying finger tracing pad efforts and 2 buttons below the point and shoot bit.

my left click button has died a death and won’t work, which makes it hard to drag up and down pages - does anyone know how to fix it - or failing that can anyone recommend a really easy replacement mouse that I could use that requires zero user skill to install because I struggle to get my facebook aplications to work let alone anything complicated like a mouse driver or something.

thanks

If you get a USB mouse it should just be a case of plug and play - something like this:

The button for the touch pad (mouse pad) is part of the main board inside the laptop and would be pricey to fix, it’s not under warranty is it? It may simply moved or come out of alignment or have dust in it but still a qualified IT engineer will take a few hours to find the fault, should it be a problem with the pad itself.

Have you adjusted the setting for you mouse through the control panel at all as you may have disabled it by accident -

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Mouse -> Have a look around in the various tabs and find the setting for Touch Pad buttons, I can enable/disable and even swap (for lefties) the buttons over.

I’d go for the plug & play option - that worked for my other half (stopped her geting RSI from one of the clitoris-style laptop mouses).

it used to make a little clicking noise when pushed and it doesn’t know - I suspect I have worn it out with too much porn. In the short term I have changed the setting so that it is set up left handed - this kinda buggers up all my right click functions but at least the one I use most will now work again, and I think I will get a plug and play USB mouse from somewhere. Thankyou all for your advice.

Sounds like to switch has broken, or the plastic latch which put pressure on the switch when you touch the button - can you hear anything moving around if you turn the laptop upside down?

I would check it’s not in warranty - if not, USB mouse.
