How to design a website?

#

Started by Alan

I’m interested in starting my own website, but haven’t a clue where to start. At the moment, I’m just a surfer and know nothing else. An example of my ignorance - do I need to buy a domain? How much do these usually cost?

Can anyone provide a good online resource that will step a person through creating and designing a webpage, or can anyone recommend any good books etc?

Thanks folks!

http://www.lcn.com are cheap for buying domains (just over a fiver for a .co.uk) and have tutorials/ support for web design. I’ve only used them for registration and hosting, so I can’t tell you how good these tutorials are, though.

http://www.lissaexplains.com/ is meant to be for kids, but in terms of learning the basics I found it very useful :)

I’m using dreamweaver to create my website, it’s a very easy program to use. If you can work with MS Word, you can work with Dreamweaver as well, it just doesn’t look very professional (but that could just be me) :D

I like Dreamweaver but starting from scratch with it is quite daunting. If you can get hold of a copy, it comes with a lot of templates built in, which you can then edit to make your own - might be easier for a newbie :)

I concur. Dreamweaver is great as long as you understand the basic terminology and know exactly what it is that you are trying to do. There’s no point looking at a load of menus if you don’t understand what they are offering. On the plus side dreamweaver does have some good online tutorials for beginners and a good glossary.

It’s like anything, especially software, - you need to be very clear about what you are trying to achieve before you start messing about with it - otherwise you just end up with a horrible big disheartening mess on your hands. Trust me, I know :(

I just wish the Government realised that. :(

Perhaps I should apply for leadership of the labour party?!! :D I have nothing else to do and I would have a job on to fuck it up as much as they have.

Do you actually have to be a member of the labour party to apply for leadership? ;)
