New Order to continue without the iconic bassman.

Any thoughts?

They should have called it a day back in 1993 and stuck to their solo projects. New Order’s last two albums have been decidedly underwhelming despite containing a few decent efforts(Crystal, Krafty, Waiting fot the Sirens’ Call). They just can’t pull off the dance/rock crossover anymore, and for a band that were cutting edge back in the 1980’s it’s a little bit sad to see them struggling.

New Order playing the JD songs without Hook will be a bit strange…mind, they’re playing them without Curtis, so that’s odd enough!

How can they? Hooky, after the singer, is the most vital member of the band, his bass being a lead instrument.

I’m sure they can find a bass player that can do what he did - namely play scales high up the neck with a touch of chorus :D

They’re a bit embarrassing now aren’t they. I’ve never been a fan really, some good tracks but a load of shit ones. I’m sure Hooky will be back anyway.

I think Hooky’s bass lines, with a few notable exceptions, are pretty naff, annoying distractions from the songs rather than worthwhile additions.

Mind, he’s the only member who actually looks like he’s in a band.

I don’t see why they can’t carry on without him - Electronic sounded very similar to NO and they only had Bernard so I think HE carries a lot more of the musical lead of the band than people realise.

As for the recent output, I personally thought Get Ready was fookin’ ace, and Siren’s Call was pretty good too, albeit with a couple of howlers thrown in!

This is true.

He danced like my dad. And my dad never dances. Because when he does, it’s very bad.

Put it this way, it’s worse than his dancing…

I actually think that Barney’s bad dancing is quite a good touch, a bit of a laugh and quirky in a way. Same goes for the lyrics, I think he pretty much realises he’s not a poet. Sometimes they’re embarassingly awful, often quite funny- I mean I don’t suppose when he sang ‘Every second counts when I am with you, I think you are a pig, you should be in a zoo’, he was intending it to be taken TOO seriously…

To sum up, I think it was all part of New Order’s individuality, and the fact that they can’t carry it off now means it’s time for them to retire. For God’s sake, they’ve even started allowing companies to use their songs in adverts…

I use this tactic quite often - say something stupid and then claim you were simply being “ironic”.

Well, considering he’s chuckling while singing the lyric I think we can take it as read that he wasn’t indulging in some kind of philosophical theory.

Interpol’s lyrics are hardly deep and meaningful, ‘enough with this fucking incense’ as an example, but they are still an extremely good band.

Paul Bank’s lyrics are at least reasonably well written. Bernard Sumner’s are simply crap…like an eight year old’s poetry.

???

I really can’t see too much of a difference. You can pick holes in both if you’re wanting to be really awkward, but both have some strange lyrics, others a bit cheesy, occasionally some songs even seeming profound. The whole point I’m making is that both bands are top-class irrespective of the value of their lyrics.

Short Order perhaps? Works on so many levels

short of original members
short of good songs…

How pissed off would you be if you were Peter Hook?

Ian Curtis leaves (albeit in a rather drastic manner) and they change the band name and have a new start.

Hooky leaves and it’s business as usual! :D

If you listen to the first New Order CD, the change was a lot more gradual than some would have you believe.

Still, without Hooky’s basslines, the sound will change. Mostly cos it won’t have Hooky’s wanky basslines in it!
