A very prompt but unhelpful response from The Guardian just arrived:

Thank you for your message.

The woman depicted on the front cover is not vomiting into the bin; the article concerns ‘Freegans’, or people who plunder supermarkets bins for unspoiled food. The woman on the front cover is looking for food.

The headline accompanying the picture is ‘Your dinner’s in the bin. Foraging for townies? Alex Renton lifts the lid or Freeganism’.

If you no longer have access to the article, it can be read on the website:

I hope this helps. However, if you wish to make a formal complaint, please contact the Observer’s Readers’ Editor. Information and contact details are provided below:

OK, I’ll do it when I’m in work tomorrow so that I’m “in the zone” ;)

This is my last week at being an e-mail monkey for the BBC by the way - on Monday I’m off to pastures new. So I might as well make the most of it :)

I answer complaints about me all the time… really infuriates people :D

I’m going to the Stroke Association - helping people learn how to read and write again after they’ve had a stroke. Better pay plus it’s Monday to Friday 9-5 - only down side is that I’ve gotta pass my driving test within 6 months :s

Thank you for your e-mail.

Please accept our apologies for the delay in replying. We know our correspondents appreciate a quick response and we are sorry you have had to wait on this occasion.

We recognise that some viewers of the ‘Live Earth’ concert were annoyed that the Metallica set was not shown in full.

We were keen to show elements of all concerts from around the world and took editorial decisions in advance and on the day, about the times and places we would do that.

The concerts were very fluid in London and around the world and there was certainly no prejudice about heavy metal music or any other music; just a determination to do the best for the entire audience watching on BBC TWO and One during the day. This is inevitably a fine balance and we cannot please everyone all of the time. However, we of course apologise if any particular viewers were disappointed.

Please be assured that your comments have been fully registered and added to our daily audience log. This is an internal document that is made available to the web production teams and senior BBC management.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact the BBC.

Regards

im instrested to know wether that was a personal email or if you just copy and pasted the same generic one to everyone who complaint about any bands not getting enough time and you changed a few words

Yeah, that’s a standard line - if more than about 10 people complain about exactly the same thing then staff in London draw up a line to be used. We got HUNDREDS about that Metallica thing - a lot of angry people. Don’t think they’ll be doin it again in a hurry

Does this look familiar? :)

I was highliy offended by your coverage of live earth yesterday, I wasnt
offended by any of the language as that is to be excpected at an event
of this kind. I was however offended by your editorial decisions to cut
most of metallicas first song and all of their last one, Metallica were
probably one of the biggest bands on the bill but it seems to me your
organisation is biased against genres that may not be enjoyed by the
full family so to speak, and your replacing of metallica with crowded
house was an insult to me and im sure plenty of others who only sat
through your crap programs with presenters who had no clue about
anything to see metallica.

hahahah i love when a big company like the BBC under estimate the power of any forms of rock music and get shown in the end.

is points of view still going? i can imagine terry at the end of the show playing metallica as an apology for all the people who complaint, I have the image of him introducing it in my head now.

And i was wondering why they ignored my complaint about johnathan tosser ross.

@ Mrs H - thanks, I’ve been trying to get out of here for a long time and I’m a bit nervous but excited too. I’m on office / admin / operational side of things but should still be a bit more worthwhile than what I’m doing now. I saw you’re going for a job too - best of luck. Only advice I can give is to be relentless with the ol’ application forms and don’t get too down if you get rejection letters - I must have applied for 20 or jobs before I got this one :)

Thanks Dermot - I think you’re right, I just need to not get down about it and apply for everything I see! The problem is I’ve just had 4 months off work and I have soooooo enjoyed every minute of it. It’s quite hard to think about having to get up in the morning let alone being stuck inside all day every day! Good luck next week anyway, I’ll be trying to send you good vibes and I’ll let you know if I have a stroke!
