Am I cheating?

#

Started by fatboy

Right, this is the situation. I’m currently studying Austin’s Emma for A-Level, and my tutor recommended this site for revision notes if we wanted it. I’ve spent the best part of half an hour printing these notes (for the chapters I’ve read and will read in the next few days), as I’m not confident on my own notes. I just seem to write about what I’ve read and that’s about it; I don’t really go into great detail.

So the question is - Am I cheating? Can I refer to these notes before the exam?

As always, I welcome your answers to this query.

Rock on.

i wouldnt call it cheating. If you had a copy of the exam paper before the exam then that would be cheating. These notes you’ve got (which your teacher pointed you towards) are basically another set of notes a teacher would give you. Just see the writer of these notes as another teacher.

If you’re depending on these notes, and solely these notes to get you through it then I think you need some extra help. It’s no use writing essays when you have no clue what you’re writing. Fair enough, use the notes for ideas, but don’t be depending on them to do the exam for you, because if you can’t understand the book and it’s themes, etc while it’s right in front of you, you’ll be babbling shite in the exam without it.

Just tell the teacher you have a few concerns, that’s what they’re there for.

no your not cheating

my college lectures never tell us to write notes and hand us sheets of paper with printed notes on later

the exam boards cant control what you read outside of the exam its none of their concern

as long as you dont bring the notes in with you

I did that in my uni exams. I had notes sellotaped to my hankerchief, back of my calcuator in my pencil case, you name it, i did.

But then im a degenerate who has no morals and no qualms about cheating. And i will go to hell.

…is absolutely spot on. If you’re reading the notes, and actively thinking ‘ah, yeah, that’s when my teacher was talking about such-and-such’, and ‘that relates back to the whole thing with xyz’ then you know you’re on to a winner. But if you’re reading them and just thinking ‘oh, ok’, then, as Tubthumper says, you’re just cheating yourself.

Didn’t you only start the course last week? I’d spend a bit less time printing notes and a bit more time reading the book! You might find it’s not as difficult as you think when you start to get into it, and there’s no point reading revision notes when you haven’t actually covered the material in the first place …

P.S. It’s Austen not ‘Austin’ - that would be a pretty bad mistake at exam time!

It’s not really cheating but It’s a bad idea to be printing notes off the internet anyway. Sounds like your teacher is a bit of a cop-out and doesn’t want to actually teach you. It’s ok to use a few notes from other sources but by making your own notes you remember the material better. And as Tubthumper and Misanthropologist said; you’re only cheating yourself by not really understanding it.

You remember things better when they are your own words and when you write them out. It’s because your mind remembers how your hand moves to write them and the characters are stored as mental images and the words and so on so it becomes easier to remember.

First off, thanks to everyone that’s replied to this. The notes that I’ve printed off are the sort of notes that tutors would’ve pointed out in class. In short, the notes break down what the chapters are about, and after I’ve read a chapter, they give an outline to what that chapter is about. I intend of making notes of what I’ve read. Again, thanks for your response.
