Need some information on Jam Jar Jail

#

Started by Soulhunter (Jelle Geens)

I have to present a song for class and I of course immediately decided to pick a Therapy?-song. Though it was hard to decide I finally picked Jam Jar Jail, which is one of the lesser renowned songs on one of the lesser renowned albums I think, but I think it’s an absolutely great song so I chose it. I’ve been reading the text and it’s probably me but I’m not really sure what the song is about? Someone help me out please?

Wouldn’t it be wise to pick a song that you know what it’s about?
Songs aren’t made to analyse, that’s something teachers always like to do with songs and poems. Songs are made for own interpretation, so just talk yourself through it. :)

Andy has written the stories behind the songs for Babyteeth, Never Apologise Never Explain and One Cure Fits All.

There may be more stories in the future. This is what Andy recently said about the subject in the Q&A session:

Dermot: Could Andy please write the “stories behind the songs” for another album? Nurse or Infernal Love would be excellent!

Andy: Hi Dermot. At some point I’d like to do it. it’s quite time consuming but the worst part is revisiting some of the less savoury memories that I thought years of abuse had blocked out. Funny you should pick Nurse and Infernal Love as those two albums were quite troublesome times. Once I get this new album out of my system I might venture back (and cringe).

In answer to your question Soulhunter, I think it’s about the frustrations of being from a small town. You can leave, but you’ll always have a bit of that small town mindset, or you may never escape - like a butterfly trapped in a jar.

Well it’s not like I really didn’t have a clue what it was about but in case I got it wrong completely, you know, I don’t want to be telling lies about my favourite band do I? ;) I like your interpretation Dermot, ‘cos it’s much like mine. My idea was that the ‘tourist’ was actually a girl who comes to the city (you walk just like a tourist) which is actually not all that great (which was kinda clear) but only for a local concert and pays no attention to the guy singing it (‘I know you need music more than you need love’). And then the girl wants nothing to do with the strange people of the town (including him) and turns him down and he gets kinda frustrated about it. Though, with all songs, there’s usually more than one interpretation possible.

I really like that interpretation

and the ‘you walk just like a tourist’ line could be about how in a small town everyone can straight away identify an outsider
