Therapy? Lost Songs - Update

#

Started by Alan

Hi folks,

I’ve been going through some old posts here, and compiled some info regarding “lost songs” by Therapy?. I hope by putting these in one post, it will help clear up things and provide some info. A lot of this stuff came from Alex’s now-defunct suicidepact.com site. Where applicable, I’ve added a decent amount of my own info;

——————————————————————————————————————————
Bonkified (this became Alrite)
Taxi For Me (this became Body Bag Girl - ‘…though in a very different form’—Michael McKeegan)
Jimmy Tangas (this became Tango Romeo)
Swine (this became Sister)
Thunder IA (this became Big Cave In)
Holly Hunter’s Hands (this became Six Mile Water)
Titanic (this became Lonely, Cryin’, Only)
More Than Perfect (this became Safe)
Nobody Here But Us (Semi-Detached left over, ‘still floating around in our minds for future use’—Martin McCarrick) Appeared on High Anxiety.
Pride of No-one (Semi-Detached left over?)

Glen Miller (‘There is a demo of it somewhere from the Infernal Love sessions. It’s pretty shite if truth be told. It was just a poppy riff and chorus I was messing about with and the producer, Al Clay, liked it, so we recorded a version of it with the band. It doesn’t really sound like Therapy? and the chorus goes something like, ‘this is the loneliest place in the world’. It’s actually a bit m.o.r.! I haven’t got a version of it myself and if you ever see it, unless you collect absolutely everything, I would suggest giving it a wide berth. It truly is awful.’—Andy Cairns)

Kiss Me On A Ghost Train (played a few times on the Semi-Detached tour, ‘a demo recorded when we were looking for a new deal. It got us a deal, but never made an album’—Martin McCarrick) Became Last Blast.

New Song 2 / I Worship God / I Worship Cock (played live in 1996. became Black Eye, Purple Sky)

New Song in D (Rene mailed Andy for his thoughts on this in 2003, here’s what Andy had to say: “as regards the ‘this is my world..’ lyric this was indeed an early musical version of joey but the lyrics were completely different and there was some cello on it.it was played as long ago as 1996, in fact when we played it on tour in Seattle in 1996 at the Crocodile Cafe(owned by peter buck from r.e.m.’s wife) peter buck himself who was in the audience claimed that it was his favourite song in the set! something to do with the opening lyrics which originally went..”i want to fuck my mum, i want to fuck my dad”!) Became ‘Joey’.

Again and Again (played live in December ‘95, became Stay Happy).

Un-named acoustic track - a new original track planned for a b-side on the Diane single. Didn’t happen.

Valentines Day - recorded during Shameless sessions in 2001. Never officially released, though mistakenly appeared on a promo)
Shameless - recorded during Shameless sessions in 2001. Slated for release on Sub-Pop split 7” single with The Black Halo’s, but never happened.
Blood Sucking Freaks - cover of a song by The Black Halo’s recorded during Shameless sessions in 2001. Slated for release on Sub-Pop split 7” single with The Black Halo’s, but never happened.

Atomized (old name for So Called Life ?)
I Won’t Let You Die Alone (rehearsed for NANE, not recorded)
Old Europe (rehearsed for NANE, not recorded - “fallen by the wayside from original 19” - Michael)
Plebians (recorded for NANE, never used)
The Third Face (rehearsed for NANE, not recorded)
Walked Through Darkness (rehearsed for NANE, not recorded) Later recorded for OCFA.

Live stuff from 2003 (these were probably early versions of NANE songs, likely re-written and re-named):
2 Bags - played in Helsinki in 2003
Dead Shark - played in Weert in 2003 (noise tune)
Heavy Metal Morrissey - played in Leeds
Shamburger - on set list at Utrecht, was it played?
Tropical Breeze - played in Oslo in 2003 (member ‘standinline’ said: “sounded like Heavy Surf-punk-rock, very Melodic almost like “C.C Rider”)

Ark 21 demo ‘98 (which got them signed to the label) - Never Ending, Kiss me on the Ghost Train, Hate Kill Destroy, Other Peoples Misery.

“Freeze the Remains” appeared on a compilation cd called ‘Sound Check’ which was given away with Rock Sound magazine no. 85. I’ve seen this cd on Ebay every now and again.

Before that, it was an exclusive download track on itunes, I think.

“2 Bags” from Helsinki has been bootlegged, as have “Again and Again” (from London, Dublin, Belfast), “Kiss me on the Ghost Train” (from Brussels), and “New Song 2” (from various dates).
Valentines Day from the promo is also in trading circles.

That’s all I know of.

While going through the old “Funny Farm” fanclubmagazines, I noticed a track called “Stay Awhile”. It was recorded in November ‘94 at Chapel Studios as an Infernal Love demo. here’s what Michael said about it in his diary;

“Listen to a DAT of “Stay Awhile” then myself and Fyfe try to multi-track a version without guide guitar or vocals which is damn hard. In fact it’s impossible so we give up”.

Found some more (from Michael’s diaries) if anyone cares;

Pringle Farm demos (Dec ‘05):
Dollmaker (became Freeze The Remains), Batbomb (became Crazy Cocaine Eyes), Clowns Galore, Bounce.

Clowns Galore was also recorded, but not finished, in March ‘06 at the Hive in Derby.

Freeze The Remains wasn’t on the Rain Hits Concrete ep, it’s released on I-tunes UK only, but was also on a sampler of Rock Sound Magazine.

i don’t know if t? have the rights to all these unreleased songs, but if they did it’d be great if they released a compilation themselves and sold it through the site. i’m sure there’s lots of people who’d be interested in buying this, and i guess it wouldn’t cost that much to put all this together. maybe it’s not feasible but still it’d be great to listen all this stuff.

So, would it be okay to ask for those songs or would I get crucified for doing so? ;-)

Seriously though, I don’t think it’s any problem to request those. Mail me if you’re desperate for them.

I wouldn’t mind “Valentines Day” and “Freeze The Remains.” Would someone mind e-mailing them to me? I know I’m not a prominent poster here, but I’m a big fan. This is actually the first time I’ve even heard of these two songs, which is surprising to me.

My e-mail address is support AT goodpigbadpig.com. Thanks!

i thought i had read somewhere (in a interview?) that t? had recorded a totally fucked up song around the nurse era when they were about to be signed by a&m, to test if the record company would interfere with the writing process and tell them what to play. or am i making this up?
