Problems with BT?

#

Started by White Psycho

Just a quick piece of advice, if you’re experiencing problems with BT cut through a lot of the shit and dial 0800 800 151. It’s the fault reporting system, it’s far more competent than the Broadband technical helpline, which was pathetic.

My only problem with BT is they want £125 to reconnect a phone line which has a dial tone and simply needs switching back to them at the exchange after it was previously owned by a different supplier that no longer exists :(

^ ^ You see, i never understand charging exortinonate amounts of money for a simple task. If BT said that to me i’d go ” Ok. but first I will need an itemised bill detailing exactly what £125 covers. You shall receive the £125 when I am happy that it is sufficient funds to cover what you intend to do ” :)

Same with dentists.

” My tooth hurts ”
” £40 to look at it ”
” Um ok…I’ve looked at it plenty, who’s going to pay me ? ”

And they charge you a fee when you cancel - but when THEY cancel - you get nothing :p

stop giving bt so much grief. you dont realise how hard they get it due to government regulating their every move and forcing them to do things that can provide alot of hassle and cost tons of money all in the name of public service.

I heard they recently had to cut their prices by a huge amount because they were simply making way too much money and ripping off the public.

Yeah - but as I asked before - is it your internet connection that is dropping (modem to BT) - or your WiFi connection between your PC the modem?

Cause it could well be there is a simple fix…

If it is a problem with the wireless - it could be that several people in your street also have wireless routers… by changing the channel number on your router you might get a more reliable connection between your pc and your router, (you can check this by searching for networks on your PC).

If the Internet connection is failing you should still be able to see that you are connected wirelessly to your modem/router (you can test by putting the IP address of your modem into a browser when you have connection problems…) If that is the case, It could be that BT are oversubscribed and you’d be better moving to a better ISP.

Check out http://www.dslzoneuk.net for price, service and speed comparisons of ISPs

It could also be interference on your line - so you’d have problems connecting to anyone. It would be worth finding out how far away from your local exchange.

There is also a section on the above link that shows some simple steps to getting a better connection (like disconnecting unused wires in your phone wall sockets, making sure the distance between your modem and the wall socket is as short as possible, and making sure you have your filters set up correctly)

Hey Gav (if you’re giving out free computer advice :D) - I had to reinstall enverything recently as my PC fucked up, and now uTorrent kills the internet and I have to restart everytime I want to use the program (slow download times too and the uTorrent indicator stays orange insntead of turning green). As far as I can see the settings are all the same as they used to be…

Dunno why uTorrent would kill the internet…

The green/amber light - does that indicate your NAT settings? if so, it sounds like you have either a firewall running or you are connecting via a router that is blocking the ports that the torrent client wants to use.

Try temporarily turning off your firewall and seeing if that works - do you use a router? if so, what type?

You could also try installing a different torrent client to narrow down where the problem lies - give azureus a try (google it)…

If that works fine - there is a setting in uTorrent that is fucked - else it is going to be an issue with NAT / ports /firewall…

Yeah, I’ve tried all those things but it still doesn’t work properly (it works but the download times are really really slow). I don’t know what NAT means but the orange indicator says “No incoming connections. Unless the icon turns green it could indicate a problem with your network configuration”. I don’t understand why it’s not working though as it used to, and I didn’t change any router/port settings then (I’m using a DLink DIR-100 router).

And as I said, I can’t use the net while downloading and it takes about 5 minutes to reconnect after turning off uTorrent.

I’ve never used uTorrent - and as I’m at work i cant install it to have a bit of a go ;)

http://www.utorrent.com/setup_guide.php - see if anything on there sounds like it might be what you have… there is a link at the bottom to port forwarding.

It might just need the windows firewall setting up to allow the uTorrent traffic through - if that doesnt work give azureus a bash! - its a decent enough torrent client - if azureus doesnt work either - its definitely a port forwarding / NAT issue

Has your router got a firewall on it?

mine has, i have to enable my pc has the dmz plus one to use torrents at a reasonable speed.

maybr your the same, and reinstalling windows counts your computer as a different one to the router meaning you might no longer be dmz plus

deadsetgav wrote:

you dont want your pc in the dmz ideally - it pretty much defeats the point of having the firewall. Open the required ports.
