Pitchshifter

#

Started by Kill_Hill (Brendan)

Was flickin around last night on the old tv and I came across a Pitchshifter gig on Scuzz, not the first time I came across this gig mind, the people at Scuzz seem to ahve a very limited amount of programmes. Anyway I was struck by the sheer pointlessness of it all. Yet again I was looking at a new guitar player or in this case players. And then there was interviews in between each song with Jon and Guitarist X blathering on about how their music has been used in absolutely everything from ads to film to tv to internet and he was quite proud of the fact. I was disappointed to say the least that they didn’t give a toss what their music was used for and didn’t seem to exercise any quality control what so ever. Added to this the fact that their last 2 studio albums were bog standard, i’d nearly go to say that they bordered on nu-metal. At one point they were the loveable lefties hell bent on fighting the system but the ol major label deal seemed to suck away at their creative soul. I’m sure they are top blokes and all but they are still doin the odd gig with just 2 of the original members, 1 if you wanna be interly accurate. Personally I think it all went wrong after .com when the drummer and the guitarist left. Can’t say I thought Jim Davies brought much to the band if anything he limited them although i’m sure its the road the Claydens wanted to go down. MInd you I was them on the Deviant tour and they were great.

Any thoughts?

Hard to know.
I’m sure there are some people who would watch a recent Therapy? performance and think it was pretty pointless compared to their earlier industrial-tinged stuff. They’d say the band lost themselves after signing to a major.
I don’t know much about Pitchshifter to comment too much, is their recent stuff really that lacking?

Infotainment and .com were my favourites.

I know what you mean Brendan. I think the last one I bothered buying was PSI - you listen to that, its not that its a bad album (in its own way), but if you then put Desensitized on and reallise just how much they lost their way…

The early stuff was kinda like Godflesh heavy and to go to a slightly heavier version of Linkin Park in 10 years…

Yup, Infotainment and .com were great. Deviant is sorta like the Infernal Love of PSI for me. it’s not a bad album, but it pales compared to the output before.

I find it kind of an achievment how they managed to gradually evolve from one sound into another quite different sound

Its an achievement to go from sounding totally unique and exiting to generic and a bit boring in under 10 years?

I had one of their tunes on my mp3 player and thought it was fantastic. I played it for my g/f and she said it sounded like Linkin Park. And it did! I lost interest in them after that!

http://www.pitchshifter.com is supposed to be a ‘classic’ album. Is it any good? The metal press loved it when it came out

yep, .com is a great album. They were pushing them selves on that one, loads of samples and beats. They were way ahead of everyone on it so much so that no one has really got near what they were doing, although I though that a few of the tracks on the current Dillinger album stayed into .com territory.

Have to agree with gav, they went from sounding like Pitchshifter to sounding like everyone else which was a shit move. Although I’d say Linkin Park sound like Pitchshifter as opposed to PSI sounding like LP

I had .com and went to see them on that tour but for some reason I’ve never bothered with them since. I’ll have to check them out again.

I think PSI came out in 2002 or 2003 which was a couple of years after Hybrid Theory… I wasn’t suggesting that Pitchshifter were directly influenced by them, but that album is probably the closest sounding thing I could think of to describe them.

I don’t mind the PSI album (or Linkin Parks album come to think of it - if you block out the shitty lyrics) but it doesn’t stand well against their early work.

Great band , like the majority of they’re stuff , propbably the latter stuff more tbh more catchy in my opinion. Plus they only played one or two of the pre .com stuff live , so they must rate all the latter stuff surely?

.com is amazing, 10 years on theres still nothing like it. as for the subsequent albums, i love them, Deviant was a step in a punkier direction, whihc really confused me when the guitarist left saying he wanted to play more punk stuff, and PSI starts off abit slow but has some killer songs on it, and also led me to discover the glitchy beatatic Drawbacks as the did some of the programming and have been permanment shifter guitarists since 2003. plus the new songs on the free cd’s given out on the last couple of tours are really promising, big and brutal sounding.

I’m glad some of ye like the last few PSI albums not saying they are shit or anything but I thought the were average and they could have been made by any number of bands, unlike .com. I wouldn’t say the latter albums are punky, I think they are too processed and over produced for such a tag. Although that song on Deviant, the one with Jello Biafra on it is punky but its pretty feckin cheesy. Come to think of it they sound rather american on the last few albums, which in my view is not a good thing when you hail from Nottingham.

Pitchshifter were the first big band to publicly support us, or offer us any help. I still remember seeing a Lost Prophets sticker on one of their guitars, and losing it! It was kind of a stamp of approval from one of the bands we looked up to, a band who were then leading the way for UK rock. They never compromised, were as sarcastic as hell, and wrote awesome songs. They helped us no end, offering us tours and talking us up in interviews and for that we will be forever in their debt. I am sad that they had to split, ‘cause I think they had a lot more in them. Pitchshifter: awesome guys, amazing songs, legends. Rock on!”
