Who here has experience of this? Are there any hints or tips you could impart?

Pub prices are too expensive so i figured i’d try making my own ;)

my grandad used to do it in his shed, apparently it tastes better (he usually drinks carling though so to be fair anything tastes better) He had like a barrel and it took quite a few weeks for it to be done, I think if i remember correctly you buy like a barrel then you buy refils for it though i cant really remember what he did i was about 7 or 8 years old at the time

@Gimme: Yeah you can buy them in “kits” which tend to be small barrels with all the ingredients inside.

Did this back in the 90’s as it was something of a fad in the States back then. It’s actually quite easy and economical, but as gimme correctly recollects it can take about 3-4 weeks to make 5 gallons (about 19 litres) of ale or lager. What’s cool is that you can make it as simple (like making a giant vat of soup) or as complex (measuring liquid densities, baking extra grains for your mort, etc) as you like. Would recommend getting a copy of The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charles Papazian as a starting point. Cheers!

I used to brew lager when I was a student…it’s certainly a cheap way to get pissed but I wouldn’t exactly call it a quality beverage. Especially if you drink the sediment bit that forms at the bottom of the bucket :) And it makes your room smell of yeast which I imagine some ladies would probably find repulsive.

I don’t believe there’s any way in hell you can make an even remotely nice-tasting homebrew whisky.
And I wouldn’t trust vodka I’d made myself not to kill me.

haha i wouldnt be drinking it, I’d be sticking a label with a russian looking name on the bottles and flogging it to corner shops to then sell on to youngsters from the estates.

Hmm. That’s odd. The stuff we made was really good. But eating/drinking the sediment chunk wasn’t anything that ever crossed my mind! :-D

Yeah, if I’d made my own vodka (my def drink of choice nowadays), I’d be afraid to try it as well and would probably end up using it to thin paint or start my car on a cold winter day.

I made my own damson and plum wine when i was a teenager, took around eight or nine months though. actually turned out good, bit fruity though. my dad makes poitin and sells it but that doesnt interest me. brewing beer and fermenting wine is more interesting, as your brewing for taste as well. a friend of ours built his own bar in his house, using all his own alcohol, he had to get rid of it after a year because of the damage that ensued. Imagine having beer on tap in your kitchen :)

I hear the Coca Cola Co makes Dr. Pepper out of it! ;-)

Seriously, though, you gotta scrape that out as you’re gonna want to sanitize your bucket with each new batch.

I remember doing it round a friends house when i was about 18/19. Trouble being that we made about 40 pints worth, with only he and i drinking it! If memory serves me right it started out tasting okayish but after 3 or 4 pints and severla cigarettes you’re just pissed and don’t care what it tastes like!

I liked the idea of this. But…
My friends step dad did it a few times. He had a kit where you’d make a quarter kegs worth at a time. I just remember it wasn’t very good, and it smelled bad. May have been the cook, but it killed any thoughts I had of trying it.

My friend brewed some homebrew cider when we were 16 - we spent a sunny sunday afternoon drinking it in his garden, it tasted like shit, watery shit and didn’t seem very strong at the point of consumption. I did, however, go home in an ambulance.

Ah - we had an early start, much was consumed, 8 or 9 pints of home brew cider and half a bottle of spirits on an empty stomach and a 16 year old dont mix well. Captain 999 took me home rather than to A&E for a stomach pump (as I had already managed that myself through the power of vomit)
