For weddings, you can hire a suit, certainly a lot cheaper than buying one. And if you go to a decent place you know you’re getting a good suit.

I like wearing suits! Especially to work, it means you’re “in work mode” when you have it on, but you can relax more when you change out of it. I got mine in Dunnes! :-D

Unless you are confident in your ability to ‘impress’.

had an interview today - very informal - exact same experience as WHSmith - thought id pop in a day early to check the times - the manager said ” ooops i forgot to tell you - i cant interview yuo tomorrow - do you mind having a chat now instead ? ”

It was very informal - i tried to be as informative and enthusiastic as I could. I think it went well - but I am 100% fully prepared to get the ” after careful consideration ” letter. :’(

After careful consideration ..they ought to sack the manager - he doesn’t sound very organised

I don’t wish to be rude to anyone here, but if you are constantly getting turned down for jobs, there must be a reason.

Now, that could be down to:

1. How you present yourself at interviews - not just clothes but also your manners and mannerisms, the answers you give, your attitude etc

2. Skills you lack. Now, it may be a good idea to step back from the process and say “well, what are they looking for that I am not offering them?” You might even be able to identify specific skills you can obtain from a course at a local college. Just as an example, say you were going for a load of jobs in offices and getting nowhere, you might want to consider expanding your computer skills, familiarise yourself with specific software packages that are widely used and so on.

PLEASE note, I am NOT having a go at any individuals on here! I am just saying that it sucks that you are banging your head against a brick wall, but maybe rather than slog your guts out trying to get jobs you are never going to get, maybe you could have a fresh look at the whole thing, take a step back and make a few major but simple changes that could help.

@ Dennis, that’s pretty much what I was saying in my original post too.
If a full-on college course is not on, there are plenty of government funded 3 month courses etc (well, at least in Ireland anyway, funded by FAS), that provide various job relevant skills such as computer skills etc. These can be done in the evenings. Even the fact that you’re attending them impresses employers. Better doing them than not doing them.

I’m not going for jobs i know I cant get. I’m going for jobs in which i’ve had the most experience. And I always present myself as best I can and be as communicative as I can, but something always lets me down.

It’s catch 22 - you dont get jobs because your CV is limited. But you cant improve your CV until you get a job, meanwhile, you cannot get a job because you have no experience, BUT you need to get a job to garner some experience. ITS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE

I don’t envy you.

Pretty much every job I have ever had I fell into almost by accident, so I can’t say I have been through this kind of thing. I am very lucky, hopefully you’ll get some of that kind of luck too.

I do think Mrs H’s idea of approaching an agency is a good idea. At the very least, if there is something major that you don’t realise or have overlooked they will be able to point it out and make suggestions.

Voluntary work or a college course would both improve your CV and provide you with a recent referee. If you’re on the dole then you can get on plenty of courses for free. When I became a single parent I had to sign on, so I got myself on an ICT course and walked straight from completing the course into a job. Bearing in mind the only work experience I had was working in a newsagents four years earlier, I think my pro-active approach was a big influence on my employer.
