Rene, what are you using to test your pages on your home computer? Do you use MS Personal Web Server or IIS? I’m thinking about getting into ASP so I’m looking into all this stuff.

Just buy another PC and a copy Windows 2000 Professional with MS-SQL and use IIS.. erm.. or use an illegal copy like everyone else.

Ofcourse, you could also get Linux/PHP/Apache/MySQL legally for free…

Well, if you’re on a flat-rate connection you can just test online.

Hey Brendon, I used to have PWS on Windows 98 to test offline, but for a couple of months I have been using IIS 5 on Windows 2000. My current setup is more stable and faster then PWS on Win98.

It’s easier to configure (PWS is kinda weird in some ways), and just works better, so I’d recommend IIS on Win2000. Cheers, Rene.

As for databases, I use Access for this website, but SQL Server at my job, and SQL Server is way better (handles a lot more concurrent users / has stored procedures). The reason I use Access for my own website is that web hosting with SQL Server costs a lot more, and it’s not worth it yet. Cheers, Rene.

Buy another computer? If I had money to throw around like that, I’d have just bought a copy of Cold Fusion Server, which I’ve always used for my server side tasks.

I’m not too thrilled about the idea of putting Win2000 on my computer just for IIS. With my luck, it’ll crap out and I’ll lose all my important stuff (porn, mp3s, video game highscores). I’m thinking I’ll just use PWS for now, even if it’ll take me 10 hours to download. I recall hearing that the basic version of IIS only allowed 10 concurrent visitors anyways…and I’m pretty sure Access allows around 200 or so as well, which is more than enough for my needs. Thanks for the suggestions, guys.
