Slayer’s “Unholy Alliance” Tour Down-sized

#

Started by Dennis (Dudley Less)

As I have mentioned elsewhere, Slayer’s Unholy Alliance tour at the end of the month has been moved to smaller venues.

My local one, the Birmingham NEC (recently rechristened naffly as “LG Arena”) has been moved to Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

For me personally and financially this is good news (£8 to park at the NEC? FACK ORF! + I can get the bus to Wolvo and have a few halves of shandy) but I’m interested as to what people think of the reasons behind this. I mean, naturally poor ticket sales of course, but Slayer have a good reputation as a live band, lots of fans and Metal is back in popularity again, so why don’t they attract large enough crowds?

Too many tours?
Too many DVDs?
Too expensive?
Trivium are so shit?

any thoughts?

I have seen Slayer live twice in recent years and I have to say that I found their performances half assed in both instances.

They looked like a tired band going through the motions.

I was disappointed and would never bother go to see them live again to be honest.

I still find it hillarious having a stanch Christian singing wannabe satanic lyrics…

yeah the lyrics were always the worst thing about Slayer.

I think it’s daft of Araya to stand there and sing lyrics he doesn’t believe in, but then even Kerry King says that he doesn’t believe in all the satanic stuff and he only does it to get a rise out of the Christians.

Mind, when you make the kind of music that Slayer make, your choice of lyrical themes is severely limited!

I agree that Tom’s looking tired these days. I would say that I can’t see them doing it for much longer, but then how many other bands carry on way past their sell-by dates?

Brum, Glasgow and Manchester are the downsized ones. Sorry, I didn’t make that clear, but I bet you’re right about the curtain.

Apparently, at the first London one they’re doing the whole of Reign In Blood (yawn) and at the second one it’ll be a totally different set which will be filmed for a DVD.

I only saw Slayer once, at Download in 2004, and I had only just started listening to them. I hadn’t even realised Lombardo was back in the band so I didn’t pay as much attention as I maybe would have.

I could happily live without hearing another stoooopid Hanneman or King solo, but I’m looking forward to hearing those riffs nice and loud.

I have to say im surprised by this - Christ Illusion isn’t their best album but it did quite well sales wise. Its probably because people are spending their money on Metallica who were, and always will, be better.

Maybe people just aren’t spending their money full stop. Maybe it’s cos they ain’t got any!

With a bit of luck, ticker prices (in the UK at least - I can’t speak for anywhere else) will start to become more realistic and will stop racing up. It’s like watching a petrol pump display sometimes with the price of these things.

At the same time as CD’s have been driven down in price, the live arena has gone the other way.

Don’t know that I’d say Metallica were the superior band…of course it’s all down to personal preference, isn’t it? but.. I think Slayer are the better musicians, leaving aside the godawful solos (mind I’d say the same about Kirk’s solos…) But then there’s a time and place for Slayer and sometimes I just don’t want to hear them whereas Metallica are the more accessible band. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up for debate, I guess.

My exact thoughts , Both times i’ve seen them they were completley blown off the stage by Slipknot and then by Lamb of God even, they did really look like tired old men.

Really once you’ve paid £35 to see Slayer once you never really need to see them again.

I think it was an ambitious choice to beging with - Slayer are long past filling a stadium like that on their own. The last tour they had slipknot to draw the numbers - Trivium don’t have that kinda pull.

Slayer are a good festival band - play their best stuff for 40 mins and then fuck off - I saw them play the NIA on the date where Pantera pulled out and 2 hrs of Slayer was boring as fuck

i’v had the misfortune of seeing slayer 3 times. the first time i went to see the was on purpose back around 98/99. thier fans are the worst really, still remember this meat head going out of his way to scream and give the finger to Fu Manchu who supported, the Fu guys just pointed and laughed at him.

saw them supporting Pantera in 2001 and at Oz fest in Ireland a few years back. Personally i can’t stand the fuckers or their fans for that matter. present company excluded of course, you know the fans i’m talking about

No I agree, some of the fans are just pathetic.

One of their DVDs has some footage of fans before/ after the gig and I must admit it put me off the band for a while cos they are such morons.

I am expecting a load of knuckle-heads that punch and elbow down the front, but then as a Motorhead fan I am used to seeing this minority of idiots who know fuck all of the band’s music but just come for a good scrum.

Wankers.

Slayer gigs being downsized?

Can’t say I’m surprised. I saw them in Cardiff two years ago, far from sold out and they looked bored and just didn’t want to be there. I had seen them two years before that supporting Slipknot and they blew the headliners off.

Funny what two years can do to a band.

Also, they’ve not released a decent album in years.

Roll on Priest in Feburary I say.

But yeah, Slayer.

So, what do I have to look forward to, eh?

A pissed off band that has had to suffer the embarrassment of shifting to a much smaller venue when by all accounts they sound tired and past it anyways!

Yay!

Another 35 quid well spent by the Dave-meister!
