Thrash Recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good thrash band who don’t do that annoying ‘growly shouty’ thing where you can’t here a bloody word anyone’s saying? I’ve tried valiantly to get into Trivium and the music is really fantastic, just seems that it’s spoilt by the periodic ‘growly shouty’ which they seem to stick in songs at fairly random intervals! Something with Trivium’s musicianship and Metallica’s vocals would be great! In fact, my dream thrash band would be something like: Bonn Scott on vocals (leftfield I know but how good would that be!?), Danny Carey (Tool) on drums (the best rock percussionist in 30 years), James Hetfield on rhythm guitar (riffage master par excellance), MikeHell on bass and someone like Matt Heafy or Dimebag on guitar. But I’m open to offers and any suggestions welcome!

You could try the old Anthrax albums. Belladonna wasn’t “growly shouty”. There would also be Overkill and Testement.

All a bit old school I know, but I can’t really think of many new thrash bands without shouting vocals.

You could also try Nevermore.

Annihilator are effin’ excellent but the vocals are VERY 80’s! But I’d recommend Never Neverland as being up there with superb songs and musicianship.

Yeah, the current Annihilator vocalist is actually quite good, but some of the previous were indeed iffy. Jeff Waters is a kick ass guitarrist.

Their recent album Schizo Deluxe was pretty cool IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve got most Megadeth albums actually but forgot to mention those! Just checking out the Testament video to ‘Souls of Black’ on Youtube. Although the start is a bit ‘Bad News’ with them walking towards the camera like that (?!) the song’s excellent. Anthrax seem really worth checking out as well so thanks again. I’ve somehow let a lot of this stuff pass me by and now everybody does the ‘death growl’ and I just can’t get into it. Thank God T? have resisted and actually sing!

Their not really a thrash band, but I don’t see why any thrash band wouldn’t like Suicidal Tendencies in their late 80’s/early 90’s period. Check out the albums “How Will I Laugh Tomorrow… When I Can’t Even Smile Today”, “Lights Camera Action”, “The Art Of Rebellion” and maybe “Join The Army”

Try Xentrix great British Thrash band with proper singing - really underated band. Try albums Shattered Existence or For Who’s Advantage?.

If we’re talking Anthrax, for me it has to be “We’ve Come For You All”, not the old stuff with Bellend-donna on vocals.

John Bush has clean but very powerful vocals, not a million miles away from Hetfield but different at the same time.

Not a thrash album by any stretch, though there are nods here and there towards their speed metal/ thrashier past (“Black Dahlia” is surprisingly heavy in places)

Probably not what you mean with your thread, but I can’t resist the temptation to plug this ace album.

Have you tried Exodus? Anything with Steve Souza on vox is kinda like a Bon Scott thrash experience. Fabulous Disaster is good fun.

Not quite sure why you’re lumping TriviBum into the Thrash catagory, but anyway. Everyone hears something different I suppose.

Megadeth! No need to say much. Just get all the albums. Even the last 2 are worth checking out.
Anthrax! definitely. All John Bush albums are deadly. “…White Noise” and “We’ve Come… being the best. The Belladonna albums are very good for the most part. “Persistance Of Time” is definitely his best one but the older albums have all the classics.
Testament are outstanding. The early stuff is kinda take it or leave it, but everything from “The Ritual” on is nothing short of excellent.
Exodus are probably the truest thrash band still doing the rounds. The older albums all classics. And the last few new albums are brilliant also!
Overkill have always stayed true also! A shit load of albums to pick through. Fairly hit and miss, but not bad at all.

Of the newer thrash revival bands doing the rounds.
Evile, SSS and Municipal Waste, as mentioned above.
Also check out Gama Bomb and Bonded By Blood.
