New Manics Album Info

Started by Dennis (Dudley Less)

Just had this through from the Manics website thingy cos I am a sad subscriber that must have bought something off them and got my email address caught up in their spam machine:

“Hello everyone

We thought you would like to know that we have been making music. We have been in the studio with Mr Steve Albini recording live – to tape – analogue – no digital hiss – no Pro Tools – no safety nets. Quite scary, daunting but invigorating.

All the songs we are recording are lyrics left to us by Richey. Finally it feels like the right time to use them (especially after the last 18 months being so amazing with Send Away The Tigers). Musically, in many ways it feels like a follow up to the Holy Bible but there is also an acoustic side – tender, romantic, nihilism, “Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky” esque. It’s a record that celebrates the genius of his words, full of love, anger, intelligence and respect. We have to make this great. Wish us luck.

We hope to release the record next April or May. The working titles are “Journal for Plague Lovers” or “I Know I Believe In Nothing But It Is My Nothing”.

Love
Nicky, James and Sean.”

I mean…FUCKING HELL! Richey’s lyrics?!

*gobsmacked*

Sounds great except for the part where they’re trying to cash in on Richey’s name.

And the second working title is too reminiscent of “This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours”.

Still, I’m excited about this. I’m one of the few who never felt enraged or let down by anything the band did (musically).

I can’t see how they can get away with using “I Know I Believe In Nothing But It Is My Nothing” when it’s already a Manics lyric…If there is nothing new in Richey’s lyrics to use as a title, then there can’t be all that much there anyway..

Steve Albini producing…? Hmmmmm. All sounds very interesting.

Big problem is that right from the start the Manics have talked a great game, and only on the Holy Bible itself have they completely delivered the goods (yes some of the other albums are great too, but nowhere near as good as THB) so I look forward to it, but with a healthy dose of cynicism.

i got this e mail aswell because i too am a sad subscriber person.

thing about this is my heart says “yay” because in theory this is exactly the kind of thing i have wanted for about a decade but my head says “nay” because i know for a fact that it will probably be horrendously embarassing and beyond forgiveness. however i am seemingly in the minority of most old school manics fans in that i think richey is generally hugely over rated and romanticised as a lyricist anyway.

but it should be interesting anyway. and if i get another tour out of it then i shall be happy.

SATT was a great return i’ll agree.

i am a bit confused as to what they mean though about this. the nme has said it will be a full album but i really hope that isn’t the case. i know nicky can’t write for shit anymore but that really is scraping the barrel a bit. there was meant to be a book of richey stuff released at some point of unreleased stuff. i think it would be a bit sad for them to try to recreate THB with richey lyrics nowadays. i really don’t want to see james screaming lyrics that are about 15 years old written by his dead mate. for an entire album. i know some of the stuff on EMG was richey’s but those songs were mostly at least rehearsed with him around.

i hope it was nicky who wrote that e mail message because the one thing you can be sure of is that if nicky says “our next album will be a jazz polka album”, the last thing that album will sound like is jazz polka.

im the hugest fucking manics fan in the world and i can only say how lame and shallow this idea is! THB lyrix was spewed out by someone who was feeling what he was writing. Jim, Nick and Sean are comfortable millionaires with nowt much to say and if they try and make something rather than let it fall out of them it is going to sound horrible! not to mention that they have already said many times that the lyrix richie left were “rambling” and that there was “not much to pick through”. I’m scared. Very scared. The word parody springs to mind but i’ll try and calm down now!

As I was saying to Dan in an email yesterday, part of what made THB so special was that it seemed totally separate from anything else the Manics had done before and sat alone as this weird, other-worldly record that was a complete entity of its own, with its own sound, its own language and imagery.

For them to try and recreate that same feeling would kind of spoil that uniqueness that THB has.

I’m looking forward to it. It’s not like it would spoil THB - you can always go back and listen to it.

And at least theyre having a go - instead of making albums of ballads.

The Manics really need to do something that is as urgent as THB was, whether that means a similar album or one that is worlds apart, because for me they haven’t done anything that has really meant much to me for years.

SATT was a relief in a lot of ways. It shows they can still do an album like EMG at least.

They appear to be working backwards. Lifeblood was kinda like another TIMT
SATT was like another EMG
It makes sense then that the next album should be more like THB:P

Send Away The Tigers WAS a step in the right direction, deffo.

Even Know Your Enemy has some great, almost THB-ish stuff on, it just wasn’t a coherent album as a whole. More than anything, I want the new one to feel like a solid, single body of work and not just a mishmash of styles and ideas. I think SATT went some way towards that, for sure.

i reckon its a great idea, i for one welcome the fact that theyre gonna use richeys lyrics as he is one of my favourite lyricists also itll be great too have an early manics sound on future releases, THB is one of the best albums ever made, and i dont think the manics will ever top that, but with this album, if they do rediscover the 1994 sound, i think they will come bloody close.

In that case, I hope the Manics do a “Ghetto Gospel” type song with Elton John.
