In England you have to pay, but you can get loans which you don’t have to pay back until you are earning over a certain amount.

It’s free in Scotland, but only if you are Scottish, so if you are English and go to a Scottish Uni you still have to pay.

I don’t know about Northern Ireland or Wales, but I expect Wales will be the same as England.

Its actually classed as a sore on Manchester’s head :) Only kidding! Its not a long walk from the City Centre to get to and pass a lovely sign with a pink background that says “You are now IN Salford”. Gigs and such like are certainly walking distance from the Uni accommodation or a quick bus ride if you’re lazy/drunk.

I did languages. Yes, again hard to believe, Especially coming from the Black Country, where English is classed as technically a foreign language…!

AP used to be great - I haven’t been in a few years now.

Pre-internet, it used to be the only place you could buy decent bootleg cds & videos and knockoff band merch!

One course in Liverpool Hope
And there’s another course somewhere else.. Liverpool John Moore University maybe?

I’m hopeful with UUJ, then Hope. It’s important just to get in though.
Also, the police here are recruiting now.. I wanna apply ASAP!

Apply for the Police?

I’ve always wanted to be in the police, or go into teaching. I’d enjoy the wages in the Police :P and the fact that if I’m in for a couple of years I can apply to go into a specialist branch (MSU, Counter Terrorism, drugs squad, etc.) and either MSU or drugs squad would appeal to me..
One of my applications for uni is a Community Youth Work degree.. if I did that then I’d consider going into the police in a role that involves helping disadvantaged kids, or kids that are a pain in the arse.

Bloody hell!

What makes you want to do that? And I am not criticising, btw, just intrigued as to why someone would choose that as a career…?

Nah Lola, not yet, I think it takes a while. Hopefully will have a go with it tomorrow with my careers teacher or something!

Dennis, I love being in the thick of things, and I enjoy the physical aspect to the job of a member of the MSU. Imagine the intensity, the adrenaline rush, the thought of standing in a line with about 50 other men, about to charge down a pack of drunken football hooligans, or to break up a fight in Belfast City Centre at 2am when the bars have emptied.
It’s an immensely tough, high pressure, physical job. And I would love the physical and tough aspect to it. Once you’re in the zone, about to be deployed you forget about the pressure. You go out and do your job, then leave again.
That’s my sort of career, one with total disregard for my own safety to ensure the safety of some other, innocent people. And getting paid for it.

The fall back career idea is teaching. Media Studies or History / Politics!

Why don’t you see if the Gestapo are still recruiting?

I have a pretty poor opinion of the police in general. I do think things are changing for the better as they are much more accountable for their actions these days, but I still believe the riot police are far more interested in protecting property than ‘innocent people’. In fact if there are any innocent people around I would go so far as to suggest that they are far more likely to be battered by the police than by the rioters.

If you want a job that really helps people why don’t you think about signing up to be a firefighter or a coastguard? You can sign up just to be on call at evenings or weekends, so you could be a baker during the day :) Or a paramedic or whatever …

I was looking at the fire service… but the fact is, I’ve wanted to join the police for a very long time. My uncle’s in the police and loves it. I’ve trained with the police and I loved it. It’s simply something I want to do.
Problem with the fire service and the paramedics in NI is that you hear quite a few stories of them being randomly attacked, at least with the police it sorta comes with the job.
And I wouldn’t be in the MSU all the time, you only do that when yer called up to it.
