Catweazle Demo Tape

#

Started by TotallyRandomMike (Mike McGrath-Bryan)

I knew Catweazle existed but assumed they were a school band of Andy’s or something.

Wikipedia sez:
In 1990, while still unsure of Therapy?’s potential, Cairns formed another group called Catweazle. The trio, completed with Michael McKeegan’s brother Charlie on drums and a bassist known only as Chappie, played live around Belfast and recorded a seven track rehearsal tape which has been circulated in trading circles. One of the tracks recorded, “This Isn’t (Where It’s At)”, later re-appeared with different lyrics as “Jude The Obscene” from Therapy?’s 1995 album Infernal Love.

Does anyone on WoM have this at all?

Yeah, it appeared on the dimeadozen torrent site a few years ago. A lot of people on here should have it. I would do a copy for ya but all my stuff is now boxed up due to house renovations at the moment, and will be for the next few months

I added that info to Wikipedia incidently!. Like yourself, I always assumed it was from the 80’s before Therapy?, but Michael himself told me that Charlie was on drums and it was after T? had started (which would make sense because Andy & Michael didn’t know eachother before Therapy?, therefore Andy only met Charlie through Michael). The early version of Jude the Obscene is brilliant though, well worth getting for that song alone.

shit i want to hear this! i’ve still not managed to get freeze the remains. or rain hits concrete ep - is this still available? was it download only?
is it possible to collect everything we all have in one place? bootlegs, b-sides, demos, rarities? also we could put scans of adverts, pictures, interviews from old kerrangs etc and pictures of old t-shirts. i wouldn’t know where to begin but on the kerbdog site they have a good example of what i mean.

I think this isnt really possible due to the legal complications, Im not sure how kerbdog get around it (wether theyve bought their rights, or maybe they’ve managed to stay under the radar of the UMG and are doing it illegaily.)

Ladies and gentlemen,

Here’s what you are looking for.
I hope the download works though, I had to use rapidshare as megaupload gave me an error message. The file can only be downloaded 10 times from rapidshare so you better be quick.

I’m still missing “Freeze the remains”, so if anybody has the song, drop me a line.

You can expect the following (pasted from the original uploader from a torrent site), enjoy!

Catweazel
Rehearsal Tape
Belfast (?) 1990 (?)

Source: 2nd or 3rd gen. cassette > teac v-550x tape deck > m-audio duo > dsp-quattro 2.1 > xACT

1. Another Day
2. Crazy Hippy
3. (This Isn’t) Where It’s At {early Version of Jude The Obscene}
4. Pesky Injun
5. Unbeliever {early Version of Nowhere}
6. Now It’s Gone
7. Up To You

Andy Cairns - vocals, guitars
Chappie - vocals, bass
(?) - drums

Despite their short lived existence, I was fortunate enough to catch this band live once and they were really good. They were maybe only together for under a year and went their separate ways once Therapy? got the deal with Wiiija and took to touring more. Don’t know if the few shows they played were recorded but i got this sometime in late 1990/early 1991 and it should definitely prove interesting to fans of Therapy? as it displays Cairns interest in melodic punk way ahead of ‘Screamager’ etc. Vocals were shared and I’m guessing song writing also, as the track ‘Unbeliever’, sung by Andy Cairns, appears to have transformed into ‘Nowhere’ four years later! The tape is quite rough and was made with a boombox or portable tape recorder. There is a lot of fluctuation on the first track which is a pity as it’s a good one but it clears up when the tape is stopped at the end of the song, which leads me to think it was a problem with the original recorder. The other side of my tape plays fine.
Hope you enjoy this, i think ‘Pesky Injun’ is worth the download alone.
