The man who invented the doner kebab has died

Mahmut Aygun, was suffering from cancer and died in Berlin at the age of 87.

Known as the “kebab king” he was born in Turkey and moved to Germany at the age of 16 to open a snack stall. He invented the doner kebab nearly 40 years ago.

Kebab meat, consisiting of roast lamb and spices, had traditionally been served with rice but in a moment of inspiration Mr Aygun saw that the future lay in putting the meat inside a pitta bread.

That allowed customers who had been drinking to wander off into the night with their food and eat it as they stumbled home.

Mr Aygun once said: “I thought how much easier it would be if they could take their food with them.”

The first of the new snacks was served on March 2, 1971, at Hasir, his restaurant in Berlin.

It was called a doner kebab after the Turkish word “dondurmek” which means a rotating roast.

Mr Aygun went on to invent the yoghurt sauce often served with a doner kebab.

The subsequent popularisiation of the doner kebab in the UK led to many traditional fish and chip shops going bust.

In Berlin his death was greeted with sadness and one headline read: “Thanks, Mahmut!”

Maybe you should give up kebabs as a mark of respect? Then you wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to afford whatever it was you wanted to buy that wasn’t a washing machine :)

Was more thinking of going for one as a mark of respect actually , just want to thank the man for the great thing he gave us.
Maybe have a good amount of Guinness beforehand as I just can’t imagine enjoying it sober.

Actually Döner Kebab was invented by Yavuz İskenderoğlu in Bursa about 130 years ago. İt based on a idea that use the meat fire vertical. So it improves with lot of side codes and eating habits. I think this Mahmut guy use this technique in Germany before anybody else. But 40 years is too early, maybe he commercialised first. I don’t know. But thing is; no one in Europe doing this like it has to be done. Bu it’s an ok alternative to Mc Donalds, ı think.

Yavuz Iskenderoglu invented “Iskender Kebeb”, Doner Kebab is different. Telegraph mentions Mahmut Aygun invented Doner Sandwich. That’s what I understood :)

Yes Mr. Yavuz invented “Iskender” but my point is; he invented the “system” that create Döner. He was a some kind of inventor like Da Vinci (yeah ı know İt’s sound silly.) İn the other hand roots of Döner was started with the idea…Whatever, my dear sourtimes friend Nitro has a good point here; Mr Mahmut use all this ideas through the sandwich. İt’s not the way you “built” it, it’s the way you “serve” it.
