In case you’re lazy:
“YouTube has announced that it is to block all premium music videos to its British users after it was unable to reach a rights deal with the PRS, the main songwriters’ collection society.
You can read full details of the dispute here but, as you would expect, it boils down to money. In the words of the YouTube company blog, “The costs are simply prohibitive for us - under PRS’s proposed terms we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback.”
Music fans needn’t despair though. While YouTube and the PRS battle it out, you can still watch videos by many of your favourite artists on MSN Video. “

Bloody PRS, the PRS spend their time chasing after small businesses, then its questionable wether the money collected goes to the right artists.

Bloody typical…YT is just a music channel (among other things) where some of us come across bands, current or old, and if we like them we’d check out their live performances and then decide for ourselves if their CD is worth getting, etc

I see where PRS is coming from in that the artists and/or songwriters deserve to be paid for their work and no-one has the right to host stuff without the correct permission etc etc blah blah blah but they have to be careful not to price people like YouTube out of the frame. YouTube and its ilk are an essential part of the music industry now and provides the record companies with priceless advertising and exposure, yet the record companies are exactly the same people that are bitching and moaning about loss of revenue.
Fatboy hit the nail on the head when he said that people buy CD’s as a direct result of auditioning songs/ artists on YouTube. In some ways it’s only like going into your local independent record shop (if you’re lucky enough to still HAVE one) and asking the geek behind the counter to stick your equally geeky requested CD on for a bit so you can make sure it’s not shit before you buy it.
The company i work for deals with PRS a lot (I compile background music for the hospitality trade, for those of you who haven’t heard me blather on about it already ) and I get to see some of the figures of what they charge us and other companies. I won’t say any more than that but you can use your imagination as to whether I think what they charge is fair or excessive.

No need to think mate, just search for them on YouTube.

I do like how they ban your videos for having a well known song in the clips background yet they allow random users to upload tons and tons of Beyonce videos without regards to copyright violations and they seem to get away with it, lol.
