What more can be invented? Every genre i can think of has been done. I listen to 60’s right thru to today. Cant last forever.

But surely in the 60s people would have never imagined grindcore, the reason every genre you can think of has been done is because if it hadnt been done it wouldnt be a genre. The Main genres are all set in stone pretty much, but the sub genres and the genres that fuse other generes together will always be created.

i know what you mean, but even the mad crazy imaginary genres like country/deth/world/trance genres, in some ways have all been done.
maye i’m kinda asking in some ways is rock’n’roll eventually gonna hit a wall. after all we only have 12 notes to play with.

interesting question!
The way i look at it, ALL music, if you break it down, is some chords for one part of a song, and then some different ones for another part of a song to (hopefully) engage the listener emotionally in some way. People will always invent new ways of fusing styles/tunings etc to make music interesting, not to mention technology that will push sounds. There are probably people out there right now doing amazing things but it takes a long time for that to filter outwards into the mainstream and become part of our popular culture.

As for rock n roll - well it HAS hit a wall! Nu-metal was crap for the most part but at least Fear Factory and Korn had a new spin on it which was interesting. And the World responded by deciding to go back to garage rock and indie that totally aped things that had come before it and now we have crap all! But soon another genre of rock will take it over and all will be good again! I think the heavy tuned down stuff will return but much rawer sounding like the first korn album after people went off that over-produced Limp Bizkit/Puddle of mudd rubbish.

Pretty much agree with what you said there - When korn and fear factory came out - there was no one that sounded like them - even to some degree with NIN (more Broken - Downward Spiral era - I appreciate there were plenty of underground Industrial bands about).

I think with the last two ‘big’ rock explosions of our generation - Grunge + Nu-Metal - bands came out, got popular and the record companies rushed round signing ‘the next Nirvana’ and ‘the new Korn’ - Allowing for these bloated scenes to develop quickly. I think the thing with these bands is both Nirvana Style grunge and Korns down-tuned riffing was pretty simplistic to play and very easy to ape (Bush, Silverchair, Coal-Chamber, Adema… the list goes on)

I think when you get a band that comes along like Muse - again - they dont really sound like anyone else - I cant see any old fucking dick and joe forming a band / bandwagon jumping / emulating their sound cause its so complex.

They were, but I never really saw it, myself, beyond a slight similarity in vocal styles.

TBH - I don’t think much of the first album - there are a handfull of really good songs on it but the album drags and the acoutsic songs are boring.

Yeah, it’s not a patch on their later stuff, to be sure. I can’t remember the last time I listened to it all the way through, though some of the tracks are on playlists/comps I’ve made. I listen to Origin of Symmetry most. That’s mostly down to the basslines, I have to say.

I think we are waiting for a new style of heavy music to emerge. In the late 70s punk came out, 80’s brought us the hair metal explosion, 90s were owned by Grunge, and the past decade by Nu-Metal.

What’s the betting that whatever it is that emerges for the 2010’s (Electro thrash punk perhaps?) we’ll all absolutely HATE it and dismiss it as flash in the pan trendyism?
