Magic Mountain

Such an evocative song deserves it’s own topic. So, perhaps you can share your experiences with it here.. I’m sure many would feel it stands out in some way.

To start off, I’ve just had a pretty strange experience as it came on.. with lots of muddled spoken word; it was quite exquisite. Turns out, the new interview videos with Andy on Face Culture finished loading in the background and I just didn’t realise it because they were much softer than the music, and they were expertly synched. Quite silly, but it seemed a natural combination.

Please don’t be distracted by that mini-tale, what do you think about the song? I think it’s ethereal and a bit trippy - a welcome addition.

I can only hope they play it live this tour.

A nice thought, but I suppose it ranks ‘unlikely’ on the probability scale.

Whilst i like the song Im not a fan of instrumentals being played live, in my opinion a gig should be all about keeping momentum high and I kinda think instrumentals can derail things a bit sometimes, im sure plenty disagree with me though.

I agree. Absolutely love the song, i think its a definite high point in T?’s career, but live? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Didn’t Andy say after the last album that he would like to do an all Instrumental album… I would be open to that. I’m sure the record company might not go for it but would be a cool thing for them to do themselves… yay or nay?

Nay for me. An instrumental (maybe two?) on an album works, but i wouldn’t find an entire album of instrumentals appealing.

I don’t really like instrumentals myself personally… but part of me would be interested to see if they could do it and make it so it does stand up as an album so the songs would have to be really strong and interesting enough that the fact that there would be no vocals wouldn’t be a problem. This last album was so superb and had some really interesting instrumentation going on that i have spent a lot of time listening to the background and not paying attention to Andy… maybe a four track E.P i just am curious if a band can do it, i respect their song writing but i know few bands that have done instrumental stuff and its shit (IMO).. like black flag for instance.

Or maybe i’m just bored and have thought about this too much and should really get back to singing along to songs?

A 4 track ep sounds good, yeah…

See, i’m still stinging from NIN’s Ghosts. Not wholly bad, but for god sake theres like a MILLION tracks on it. Even Prince was going “dude, thats tooo much!”

Yeah i sort of listened to that in blocks of 4 songs at a time… *goes to look at his itunes* and i still have 15 tracks still to listen to which isn’t bad concidering that i bought it this time last year. I really must give it a proper spin… you know next week or something… maybe.

It’s the one song on the CD which does nothing for me. Thought it was OK first time I heard it but now I tend to skip over it as I find it kind of dull! The rest of the CD is very, very good though!

Personally I’d love to hear it live , but guess it depends on the timeslots of a gig whether it makes it into the setlist or not.
10 minutes out of a 40- or 45 minute support slot could probably be better used to blow out a couple of belters.

I’m with you LunacyBooth. Magic Mountain is okay…a little plodding for my taste. But the rest of the album absolutely slays! @ Bad Astronaut, pass whatever that is you’re smoking around! ;-)
