HMV T? Album prices

#

Started by Kyle Bovine (K B)

I’ve noticed, over the past while, and especially after buying Crooked Timber, that HMV here in Ireland have a strange way of pricing albums. Crooked Timber retailed at 11.99 (euro) on the day it was released, yet NANE still retailed at 22.99. Checking out other HMV’s in Dublin and Cork I’ve noticed that there wasn’t any change, although I did see NANE at 20.99 in one place. High Anxiety I usually see costing around 13 or 14 euro, and OCFA at around 18 or 19. I think it’s bizarre that there is such a discrepancy in the prices. It’s probably nothing to do with the band and more to do with record company/distributers/retailers, but on the point of NANE, I think HMV have overpriced it.

It goes back to the old days of wollies, they used to have chart cds at like a tenner but then the other cds would be between 15 and 18 quid. that was back in the days were in some towns wollies was the only place selling music.

I always preferred the indie stores, but these days they’re a dying breed. Can’t remember the last time I saw one in a small town.

What I have in my town is a bookstore that stocks cds, they mainly sell more alternative stuff, they have pretty much everything by therapy? in stock and at decent prices, on older cds they usually do 2 for 12 quid, and I got Crooked timber on day of release for a tenner.

hmv is notorious for having some things rediculously overpriced. but they do have some good deals/sales etc. usually anything that is reasonably current but not in the charts is stupidly expensive there. i buy most things from play.com because i am a lazy bastard (and also usually, with the exception of crooked timber which arrived rather late, you can recieve it on the saturday before it comes out). that or nick it off the interweb. either way, i’m not making unnecessary trips into cambridge town.

I miss Fopp. There is still one in the centre of Glasgow but my local one was closed down when HMV bought the chain - there’s an HMV right across from where it was. Fopp was great for offers and never overpriced new releases.

fopp was also great for arty farty quasi intellectual books which certain people think are “cool” to read whilst standing around nonchalantly in a coffee bar somewhere. our fopp closed down TWICE but it’s still open now. boo.

on the most part yes. but i am born and bred here so it is odd for me to go into town. so many many coffee shops… and pret a manger. and yet more coffee shops. you get the idea. all of our independent shops closed actually shortly after fopp opened. maybe that is why i am bitter. :)

I wonder where that club got its name.

Now that HMV have the retail Monopoly of selling music in the High Street, their prices are STUPID. I know that some stuff doesn’t get much backing and they sell it for 16/17 quid. Anyone new to that artist is not going to spend that much on a band they don’t know much about.

I miss those indie stores too. Other than selling CDs that no one else would sell it had an atomoshere to it.

the best place to get cds, was a man on the market that sold 2nd hand cds (mostly rock and metal and even bootlegs)

there was an indie record store but it was really small and only lasted a few month
