Bands Playing The Whole of An Album In Sequence

#

Started by Dennis (Dudley Less)

OK bit of a shit title for a thread, cos it’s hard to put into a snappy one-line header, but…

I have seen two bands this week (Manics & Mastodon) play their latest albums in their entirety (and in the same sequence as on the album, start to finish).
Pink Floyd do it on the Pulse DVD with Dark Side of the Moon.

I’d love the Manics to have done The Holy Bible like that too, as, like their latest album, it is a self-contained entity that works best separate from the rest of their work.

So, my question is:-

Which band and album would YOU like to hear played end-to-end? And WHY?

I thought the Manics’ playback was great - just as good as the second half of the set (saw them on Saturday).

I think I’ve mentioned this on here before, but All Tomorrow’s Parties have specialised in live album playbacks for a few years now - since 2005 I think. For example, Spiritualized are performing ‘Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space’ live in London soon:

I’ve seen a few album playbacks - Slint doing Spiderland, Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation and Dirty Three doing Ocean Songs (all at Primavera Festival 2007). Was a bit underwhelmed with all of them to be honest. Maybe it’s cos they were doing old albums, whereas the Manics’ was obviously their new one and it felt like a really special event.

But anyway, to answer your question (!) I think Pink Floyd doing Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall would be great, cos the songs on their albums all flow into each other. Tool performing Aneima would also be great for similar reasons

Oh yeah, another *kind of* playback I saw was Blur on their greatest hits tour - they played every single they’d ever released in sequence. Had the really weird and, again, underwhelming effect of finishing the night with “No Distance Left To Run” :-/

Green Day have played 21st Century Breakdown in full (and that’s a fairly long album), and as far as I know they’re doing that for the entire tour (plus a 2nd set of their older stuff).

Of course, this is the first time in 10 years I don’t have tickets to see them…

The Smashing Pumpkins doing Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Why? Because it’s my favourite album, and with the flow and variety (and length) of the album it would make a great live show. Also, there are one or two tracks from that album that they have never played live at all.

Course, I’d have to go back in time to when they had all the original* members… or even back to when they at least had two of them :P

* by original I mean the main 4 at the height of their success and the time of MCIS.

They did Earth Vs the other year - but i think I would rather see phuq or fishing too to be honest - the earth vs stuff is overplayed and I think I prefer the songs off the latter albums

I’d much rather see them do Seasons In The Abyss, personally! “Still Reigning” is great but…the ultra-fast thing gets a bit monotonous after a bit.

apart from that, nothing like that so far.

would have liked to see maiden doing “a matter of live and death”. would like to see mastodon doing “crack the skye” too. and a few others.
and i’d like to see therapy? doing a album a day for 2 weeks or so … :)

Never been sure about the Master of Puppets thing though. Orion live? No thanks!

Green Day could have got away with doing American Idiot like that, but they wimped out and started throwing older songs in half way through.

I saw Slayer do Reign in Blood in its entirety at Wacken, but they spoilt (?) it by sticking Dead Skin Mask in the middle…

I guess it makes sense - Bands aren’t making as much through album sales so they need to make more touring - If they are going to do 1 or two tours per album then they need to do something to mix it up a bit - something different to the standard ‘greatest hits’ type setlists.

Look at T - they will probably be doing the standard tour thing later in the year - but they’ve already done a mini tour playing the album - that way it is worth it for their fans to go out twice in one year to see them.
