Not next week, but i will for sure.

Are you going to, or are you sticking with your plan on getting the other ones when they’ve (inevitably) been reduced?

Pass.

I shall wait and see what happens pricewise, but I am finding it hard to leave my collection devoid of albums like Help! and Magical Mystery Tour. It just looks nekkid without them…:(

I might next year buy the box set. The cheaper one with the dvd, but It is still expensive seeing has I have got everything by them already and loads of other stuff to go with it.

The likes of play, hmv and amazon are releasing t-shirts of all the album covers. Think i’ll be ordering the Rubber Soul one next week. :)

I’ll buy them but I’m going to wait for the prices to come down. They’ll be selling for stupid amounts, and it’ll be the 66-70 era albums I’ll be buying

This may sound like a stupid question, but are the Beatles any good? I have precisely none of their albums so I only know their ‘hits’. I’m kinda tempted to buy the box set and have their catalogue in one fell swoop (and also ‘cos I like boxsets).

Thats a pretty big purchase for a first one! But yeah, if your pockets are deep enough do it. I can’t overemphasise how ace they are, and i can’t recommend a specific album, you’ve just gotta pick one and go for it.

From rubber soul onwards i felt they deserve the praise they got, they did push song writing at the time and studio techniques. Let it Be album is a bit pants though ;)

You think? I really like it. Winding road and title track aside. You can’t dismiss the pre rubber soul albums, surely??

Let it be bar a few songs was a bit patchy and the production was shit house.. phil specter fucked it! I can’t honestly say all the songs on the album are fantastic… let it be and across the universe are the two that sound the most “beatles” on the album and show the two main writers different styles.

The pre rubber soul stuff is great, i just felt they hadn’t quite found their own style till Help… which i do rate. The albums before that had a few good singles, filler and cover songs. But thats just me i think Revolver and the white album are their two best albums.

I’ve gone through fads of loving the early stuff, then the weird stuff, then the introspective stiuff, etc etc, but in recent times its been the early stuff for me again. Its just so primal, so raw.

To be honest, I do wonder how good they’ll sound - it’s not exactly like they’re working with optimum source material (especially with the earlier stuff).

Shuddup you, eh, you, erm, you BIG YELLOW COW!!!

Seriously tho, i don’t get The Beatles at all, and i know i’m in the minority. I either find them too simple and “poppy” or waaaaaaay to “far out man!!” And a lot of their songs sound exactly the same.

Dennis (Dudley Less) wrote:

I think the early poppy stuff is deceptive - it seems simple but really it’s not. Plus there was a great raw edginess to some of those tracks. Twist And Shout may be a straightforward pop song (and yes I know they didn’t write it before anyone says) but don’t they all sound like they’re whizzing their tits off on amphetamines or something? And don’t forget that some of those lyrics are quite dark, to the point of being somewhat harsh in places, so it’s not all throwaway fluff. And I think there’s some great middle ground between the earlier pop and the later far-out stuff - A Day In The Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I’m So Tired, Don’t Let Me Down are a few examples that spring to mind.

I guess it still comes down to personal taste though, so if you can’t stand the sound of The Beatles, that’s just the way it is, but I think you’re missing out, personally.

All Mod Cons got the reissue treatment a while back - double pack thingy I seem to recall with a DVD “Making of..” effort. I didn’t bother getting it, cos you can watch the documentary on YouTube :D

Amazon lists the most up-to-date CD’s of the albums as “remastered” but apart from All Mod Cons there’s none that have been given the deluxe treatment, as far as I can remember.

I would heartily recommend any human being with ears picks up the box set - Direction, Reaction, Creation - as it is usually extremely cheap (£15 at the mo, I believe, if you shop around) the sound quality is great and it has every album track and single they ever recorded.

I’d personally love deluxe versions of Sound Affects, Setting Sons and The Gift, but I am not holding my breath for them.

Aye, just checked the Direction, Reaction, Creation-Set. I might get that, the book sounds well good!

I do have one All Mod Cons copy that says remastered, but it’s not, sounds the exact same as the original CD, but you gots to listen to them on vinyl anyway.

Did I tell you I bumped into Mr Weller last year in Chicago? He was shopping in VS…

There are those that think the beatles were the blueprint for everything thats followed since, and there are those that, well, don’t! :D Obviously i’m in the former. And excited beyond belief that these remasters have finally become a reality. Fucking Ono. But yeah, i’m not gonna be all “you’re wrong!!!”. I think maybe the thing is that we’ve all grown up with them so i can understand folk thinking they’re not really any more credible than, say, old songs like “white cliffs of dover” or “roll out the barrel”. If that makes any sense! :D
