Favourite UK Bands

#

Started by Epitome (Dave)

Yes, I’m bored :-)

So, what are your favourite bands or solo artists or whatever from the UK (and you can include the Republic of Ireland too, if you like)

I’ll do mine as a top 10:

1. Porcupine Tree (& Steven Wilson solo)
2. The Cure
3. Therapy?
4. Dodgy (& Nigel Clark solo)
5. Bush (& Institute & Gavin Rossdale solo)
6. No Made Sense
7. Paradox
8. Saltslide
9. Crippled Black Phoenix
10. Tindersticks

And an honourable mention to Bossk, who did some great stuff but sadly only 2 EPs and one live song on a split EP, so not quite enough for me to put them in my top 10.

Sure i’ve seen Bossk a few years back, it was certainly a band called Bossk, just maybe not the same one, metal were they? with Grrrrgh vocals? (they were on the same bill as Latitudes (fucking awesome) and Devil Sold His Soul (Complete shit, couldn’t / can’t stand them, walked out of the gig 30 seconds after they started).
If it was the same one i thought they were good untill the singer opened his mouth, but that’s just me.

They’re a post-metal band. The vocals are very shouty, but over the 5 tracks they did (which add up to around 70 minutes of music) I bet the vocal parts only come to about 5 minutes, so not a big deal really.

Yeah that’s them, they also played my local venue with Negura Bunget and Ephel Duath as well as the gig i mentioned (just been checking online).

OK, not supporting Devil Sold His Soul (who are still shite) but Ascent Of Everest at a Shels music gig. Don’t remember them sounding like what i’m currently listening to on myspace though, this is much better!

I like Ascent of Everest too. And I like *Shels, who formed the *Shelsmusic label - who woulda guessed it?? Speaking of which, *Shels are a great band, but I’m not sure if they count as UK or American - the singer who was in Mahumodo moved to America and then started *Shels… hmmm… if you count them as British, then they can be in my list as well! :-)

dunno much about them, they were ok live, Latitudes music is put out on the Shels label so that’s where i’ve heard of them, count them as what ever you like, UK or US. Turns out Bossk have played my local venue loads of times, and the free music festival in my town as well.
I don’t have a favourite top 10 as it would change every 10 mins, Zion Train would be on there at the moment but that’s because i went to see them on Thurs, they wouldn’t have been anywhere near on the wednesday.
If you add Shels won’t you have to drop something though? and what would it be?

Epitome (Dave) wrote:

Well, my top 5 are pretty concrete, though I’d probably change the positions from one day to the next. Then I think the next 3 would always be in the top 10, but then there are other bands, such as *Shels who maybe should be in there, so I’d get rid of either Crippled Black Phoenix or Tindersticks. 3 Colours Red were good (and now Basskniv3s, if they ever get round to releasing the album.) Then there’s Headswim (and now Black Car). And Terrorvision and Laika Dog. Bible Code Sundays. The Pogues.

So, replace Tindersticks with *Shels for my top 10. And then all the other ones I mentioned are contenders as well, who might have got in on another day :-)

and about a hundred others I can’t think of right now. Wildhearts, Wolfsbane…

Some great Irish talent out there at the minute - LaFaro being the one’s to watch this year. If you get the chance you can download the album from ‘I’ll Eat Your Face’ for free from bandcamp. Brilliant stuff. Don’t forget Dutch Schultz. And Jetplane Landing. Spectator. Trucker Diablo. Howling Widow.

All on Myspace folks. More to follow!!

And welcome to the boards, Runestone! Swervedriver have been a band I’ve been thinking about checking out more for a while.

Hooch: have a listen on myspace, it’s much more gentle, the energy / anger isn’t there and whilst it’s well done (his voice hasn’t got any better tho) i don’t enjoy it as much as 93 -95 stuff. I saw them live in 2006 and they were excellent, they were playing all the old stuff as they hadn’t written much of the new yet. They’re now not really playing much as Salv (bassist) kept pulling out of gigs due to work (or so i heard), but Ed and Rob are playing S*M*A*S*H stuff with the former bassist of the Otters (who’s original drummer was Robs’ (SMASH drummer) son). Can’t remember which name they’re under but will find out and post it.

Some classic bands mentioned here. Glad to see Sabbat mentioned; i missed out on them in my teenage years but glad I bought into them later. Carcass, well, whats to say what hasn’t been said already. Bolt Thrower, under-rated, nuff said. Can’t think of anyone else right now, but Xentrix are on my mind as I write this. Okay, they might’ve been a little brother version of Metallica, but when I first heard them in 1989, they were class, and a cover of Ghostbusters to boot.

Gawd I feel old thinking about it.

got me thinking about acid reign and Reanimator now…gee, there was some under-rated UK thrash around at the end of the 80`s. I do think Sabbat were the best tho, dont think black metal lyrics would be the same now if it wasnt for that band (not that im a huge BM fan)

also forgot to include the classics like Sabbath, maiden, motorhead, Lizzy, Beatles, clash, pistols…man, we have produced some good s#it over the years

Therapy? (obviously)

The Classics never fail ;
Black Sabbath
Thin Lizzy
Motorhead
Deep Purple
Iron Maiden

Never get tired of listening to ;
Paradise Lost
My Dying Bride
Anathema
Carcass
Mourning Beloveth
Primordial
Mael Mordha

Latest additions to my fan list ;
Graveyard Dirt
Alter Of Plagues
A Little Bitter
Glyder
Atheos
Old Season
People Of The Monolith (formerly ‘This Weary Hour’)

Pretty much all I keep up with now are bands from Ireland! North and South.
The local underground scene has been churning out some great mucic over the last few years.
