So how would we rate Andy as a singer?

Better back in the 90’s, especially live. His live vocals since the 2000’s hasn’t been great though, a lot of vocal parts are being growled now instead of singing.

He’s got his moments, sometimes he’s just saying some of his vocal parts even, instead of growling or singing :D
He was indeed a lot better in the 90’s, but I think that’s normal after such intens touring for such a long time.

I think he’s a damn fine singer. He’ll never be Freddie Mercury or Jeff Buckley (or Mike Patton or Greg Dulli…) but he’s very expressive and really sings from the bottom of his heart.

I really couldn’t imagine anyone else singing T? songs any better… I think Andy’s voice is perfect for the sound of the band as a whole. And live, he makes the older songs from when his voice was fresher, sound somehow better…

Dunno if i’m coming across properly, but at least I know what i mean :D

I luv Andys vocals (well that´s no surprise;)) They were the 1st thing that got me interested in T?. For me it´s the same what he´s singing, fast or slow, pure quality for my ears. He´s not a Freddy Mercury (thank god/or devil;)), he´s Andy! And ofcourse he cannot sing like “a young boy” at this point when he´s over 40…but I´m sure we can all live with that, right:D

yeah andy has a distinctive voice, i really liked the way he sung in the early nineties in nurse, the ‘93 ep’s and troublegum. especially songs like turn, neck freak, opal mantra, unbeliever. in infernal love and semi detached it was ok but not as great ( with the exception of epilepsy for me). hearing suicide pact was kind of a shock of course, this record has some really demented vocals. i think his studio performance in the records from high anxiety onwards has deteriorated (maybe due to lack of appropriate studio time?), but in crooked timber he did get better so that gives me some hope he’ll sound even better on the next album… i don’t know, maybe he doesn’t consider that important to write good vocal melodies anymore so he doesn’t put that much effort into it?
live he was never too great to begin with… he’s decent and he’s trying though ;)

I liken Andy’s vox to a harder edged Peter Gabriel: while not technically trained, he is uses what he has in unusual and interesting ways. Not afraid of taking chances, he can sound vastly different depending on what he feels the song needs. I think he sounds great on CT, age not seeming to matter so much as he’s not a screamer like Lemmy or Hetfield.

I can’t opine whether he sucks live though, because Americans seem to be afraid of good music at the moment. :-D

So, what production suited his voice best so far?

I have to say I love the production on the minialbums where he kind of sounds like he’s bellowing from the next room, but then I’m a sucker for BT/PD.

He sounds good and unhinged on Suicide Pact, and that growly thing he unleashed on that album was pretty startling at the time - love it. He’s good at the guttural gurgling thing.

I think on Nurse it’s like they did the ‘using vocals as another instrument thing’ to great effect on stuff like Gone and, say, the chorus of Perversonality. I guess he’s a singer who isn’t afraid to try different approaches, sometimes he’s a crooner, sometimes he has that slightly American rock twang, I loved the pronounced Irish accent on Crooked Timber though.

Also, not sure if anyone would agree here - possibly my favourite singer at saying ‘YEAH’ in a wide variety of cool ways - start of Gimme Back my Brain, chorus in Stories, even the ‘Yeah’ in Fear of God is a beauty. Oh, and good ones in Joey too. Anyone else think of other good Cairns ‘yeah’ moments? I’m pretty sure there’s a great one on NANE, just not coming back to me right now.

God I always do this, don’t post for months then prattle on for pages and pages…

I think Andy was at his top while Infernal Love. Now sometimes and especially when he sings some powerful verses or chorus, his voice looks like James Hetfield’s one. But his voice keeps cool to hear it anyway.

He always feels the feel. A Moment of Clarity to Danzig esque He’s Not That Kind of Girl. He tried different things too; like Straight Life, God Kicks or Dance. I thing his highlight is A Boy’s Asleep but he’s real aim is whole Never Apologise Never Explain record – This is Andy’s most comfortable soul, like a reflection. My favorite is Infernal Love though. Great pain, greater shame and anger. Anti – White Noise.

I couldn’t imagine a different voice for this band. I liked particularly in the old days when he used to shout and scream like a drunken maniac (check out Shit Kicker)…

One thing you have to give him as well is the fact that he can sing across a multitude of musical backdrops (not many T? track albums that are the same).

Kind of digging the whole mature trip at the moment as well (I think CT is the first album where there is no “Fuck”) - still effective, albeit in a different way.

Funnily enough, Andy once said regarding BT/PD “we put so much distortion on it, because none of us could sing”.
Heh, I bet never he could imagine back then we he did those albums, he’d later do something like Diane.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that Andy doesn’t sound quite as good as he used to be on the last two albums. Live there was always a lot of variety in performance levels, I believe. One comment over at youtube cracked me up, it was also about a Diane performance (I think paradiso), where someone remarked that this must be an imposter, because the singing was so wrong. Of course, Andy is perfectly able to sing the song in a very nice way (I’d say the acoustic performance from Den Haag with Martin is superior to the one on the record for example, but then I have to say that I’m not overly fond of the Infernal Love version in the first place, I prefer the re-recorded one).

Also, I agree that Andy has a talent for the guttural gurgling thing without sounding cartoonish, it sounds good in a crazy way. But then, Suicide Pact also features Six-Mile Water, and I don’t think that’s out of place either.

It takes bollocks to sing a song like ‘Diane’ - especially when youre not known for being a ‘proper’ singer. In fact, I’d love to ask him where he got the confidence and voice to do that. And Bowels Of Love - great vocal.

I didn’t like that unhinged stuff on SPYF, thought it was a big step backwards leaving it all one take and out of tune. Brave, certainly tho!

i guess he’s allright. the biggest problem is that he has to play the guitar also simultaneously during the shows. I know well that feeling, since i’m also playing the bass guitar and signing at a local band, so it sucks. This can be proved, when Martin was at the band, so his singing was great.

The voice is perfect for such this band and this is one of the advantages. Meaning that his voice is so characteristic(and that’s a Greek word) that if you heard it once, you will never forget it.
If i had to say a disadvantage, that would be that he seems to be out of tune most of the time during the shows. Last show in Greece, if anyone has heard it on dimedozen, it was totaly out of tune all the time :). But there is an explanation, i think that he drunk too much ouzo that night lol.

And of course he’s a great singer than anyone on this board RoyBatty.
