Should I stay or should I go now…

I’m looking at a job opportunity but it’s a bit complicated and I’m not sure what I should do.

It is working for the same brand as I do at the moment, but the store is not owned by the brand in question, rather it is licensed to a third party, and it is them who I would be working for. The money is about the same, and the perks and benefits are broadly similar. I currently have a few share options with the company I work for, and these mature each year and I can then sell them - I would lose all of those if I moved. There is the vague possibility that the parent company might open a store closer to home which would be a better option, but I don’t know when and there’s no surety that I will get it.

The upside is that the new job is much much closer to home, and would save me about £300 a month on fuel, and about 7 hours a week in travel time.

I’m not going to blindly go with what you guys say but I’d appreciate your opinions.

Hmmm, £300’s a lot a month - how does that compare with the value of the share options?

I’d be inclined to stay with the larger (and theoretically more stable) organisation - I suspect if the economy doesn’t pick up soon, third parties and franchisees will get squeezed by the bigger brands, I guess it could go the other way., but I think the big brand will look after its own first.

I’d take the 7 hrs of free time every week. You won’t look back and wish you spent more time commuting. Over a year that’s a couple of working months that you could be doing something else

There’s no danger of the franchisee going under - they’re a multiple franchisor running about 30 different locations with 4 or 5 franchises in each location.

The share value kind of depends on the performance of the company - they’re at about a 5 year high now! Each time I sell my option sI earn about £1000, so I’ll get 4 times that back in travel costs. And the time is a huge draw too…

If the job is secure enough I would do it.
More on the plus side than on the minus side. The extra time for yourself and savings on travel costs outweigh the share options imo.

Plus a new working environment can be really refreshing.

You maybe aren’t happy in your current place if you are thinking about moving. If the new place is secure then I would go for it. But make sure you’ll still have a job in 6 months!! You could put your shares elsewhere, perhaps?
Can you fish around for hints about the new store, of course…

if you’re confident that the new place is secure, then the money seems to make sense.

I’ve only ever had two jobs and in both the previous one and the current one, I kinda got a bit too comfortable and ended up wishing I’d left. Next year maybe…

To further complicate the issue I have just learned that the parent company is opening a store close to home - about 5 minutes up the road in fact from the one I am looking at- in June. (factor in builders and read September/October)

This will be v. busy and v. high profile, and will likely take a bit of trade from the one I am looking at taking a job with - doesn’t cure the career progression conundrum any though.

I’m inclined to agree with CS now too - ‘busy and high profile’ sounds like a chance to make an impression if things go well, without taking that huge a gamble…
