Chromatic Tuner on Mac

Does anyone use this Garage Band application to tune their guitar and can anyone tell me if it’s any good?

I’ve been trying to tune a classical guitar I have at home and it is possible to make it say the string is in tune for a second but it never consistently stays blue (blue meaning the string is in tune). I suppose if the string is really in tune it has to stay blue the entire time you’re plucking it?

I know the problem must be the strings (or maybe even the guitar itself) but I’m mostly asking for future reference when I do get the guitar to work (or get one that works properly).

pluck the string once and let it resonate - what is the tuner saying then?

You can even get free tuner apps for mobile phones - I use gStrings for Android.

Yeah, but I took the guitar to the store today so I can tune it tomorrow. I’m confused because it varies so much and I think it will even with the new strings, should I just pay attention to where it starts out when I pluck it?

Just get it as near as you can and have fun with it.

Unless you are playing along to something, playing with other people or have pitch perfect hearing (which I guess you dont) you aren’t going to tell if its ever so slightly out of tune.

I was always told to start with the A string first - I dont know if there is a reason for this but I kinda formed a habbit from it.

I just noticed that I should pay attention to the string display on the screen - it becomes and remains blue when the string’s in tune. Since they’re brand new I have to re-tune it a lot but I suppose that’s normal. Some people have told me new strings need to be ‘stretched’ so you have to pull them or something, I’m not 100 percent sure what they wanted me to do exactly though.

Get the string in tune, then grab the string and give it a tug so its raised about 2 or 3 cm above the fretboard, this will slightly stretch the string, then tune the string in again and repeat until tugging the string doesn’t cause the tuning to drop.

Thanks, you gave me something to do with the guitar while I waited for the shop to open again :) (turns out the lessons on my mac were for acoustic and electric guitar and I needed a pick)
