VINYL

My favourite music format, possibly as much for having decent sized artwork as the rich sound! A lot of bands are choosing to release vinyl editions of their music lately which is great, so I thought I’d start a thread for all things vinyl.

Bug it most certainly is, I promised myself I’d have a bit of a break from buying records after the recent spree but managed to go out this morning to do a bt of food shopping and returned with a copy of Two Bad DJ - Clint Eastwood & General Saint as well.
What do people think to the sound quality of recent releases? I’m not sure if you get that much of a better (subjective) sound from recordings that were originally made in digital and then pressed onto vinyl as opposed to recordings made in analogue?

vinyl is a really beautiful format to own and if an album is that good its not really a problem to have both formats, and vinyl will always increase in value ,(just an opinion)

Guess it depends on the pressing and what you’re playing them on as much as anything, most new vinyl comes with a download code anyway so you get mp3s to play in the car / at work etc.

for me there is no doubt that an awful lot of vinyl sounds better than CDs ,and like Mr H stated it has an awful lot to do with what your playing them on ,i know you can get remasters on cds and that has to be a good thing, but at the end of the day music is an organic thing by its nature, its made by human beings which means its not flawless ,sometimes music can be made to clinical and clean

I like classical music recorded digitally, with a full orchestra clinical and clean and precise is a great benefit, but with rock and reggae I like the warmth and richness you get from vinyl, anyway my speakers are analogue, as are my ears so…

theres nothing like the bass sound on analouge, for some reason digital bass dosent always sound right ,real bass should be felt more than heard ,a good bass sound should hit you in the guts, but being a big reggae fan thats something you will already know!!!

So much for having a break from buying vinyl, bought Government Commissions (BBC Sessions) by Mogwai last night, great record though so well worth it.
Re bass I do agree you should feel it (listen to quite a lot of Drum & Bass as well as Reggae/Dub) but a lot of people I know just turn up the bass on their amp and you lose any sort of decent response, it becomes loose and wallowing, I’d rather have a taut bass response albeit at the expense of some of that gut shaking bass (for rock / DnB / Punk etc, with quite a lot of Dub the wallowing adds to the sound!).

With modern day technology, I don’t think any serious company would make a CD sound anything less than perfect. I always viewed the ‘Vinyl sounds better’ as an invalid kinda elitist sounding argument, since it’s always explained in vague terms and I’ve never seen any technical explanation for it that has managed to convince me. If vinyl was superior, why’d they start making CD’s and how would you explain their success? There is no real advantage to vinyl save for appreciation and the fun of having them, which imo is a good enough reason to buy them (for others, not for me, I spend enough money on music while everything’s available for free ) so I don’t mind it at all and even think it’s good vinyls survive the ages because people keep buying them, but if you view it purely pragmatically, the CD is just as good and likely superior. Other than that it’s just a question of what you like: I like CD’s because they’re in the easiest format (amongst other things) and dislike MP3’s (like playing them in a car) even though purely technically speaking they may have their advantages as well and I simply put it like that, I don’t need to make up another reason I can’t prove for it.

The reason CDs were so successful is due to ease of use and storage as much as anything else, same as mp3s which are even easier to use and store (both are also progressively easier to copy which is weird given the music industry’s aversion to copying!). In pure sound terms it’s a personal preference, any music reproduction depends on the original recording as much as anything, some vinyl does sound better to me but that’s down to personal factors, much the same as anything (like why I prefer some beer to others etc).

I do like vinyls myself (my parents have a nice collection) and we’re basically saying the same thing anyway so. I just believe you don’t need a specific reason to like something and people sometimes come up with reasons just to make more sense ^^ (I don’t mean you); With Mp3’s I can safely say there is a bit of loss of quality during the conversion though, unless you want really big (compared to the average quality files) files, then it doesn’t matter.

The reason record companies went into cd’s was mainly because they are cheaper and easier to produce. Plus the fact that they could charge much more for them!
The reason vinyl sounds better than digital is because most of the sources we hear (instruments) are analog. No matter how many slices you make you will always
lose some of the pie! Exceptions can be made for synth based music which is fully digital.
Yes cd’s are handy, ipod is even handier, but if you have a half way decent system vinyl creams digital.
Of course thats only my opinion, but then again I’m always right so end of discussion!

Next topic please…

I haven’t mentioned the last few yet… (got vinyl engine for that kind of thing ;-)

But to go back to the point I wanted to make: If as PotatoJunkie67 says the instruments are mostly analogue and therefore vinyl gives a better representation (I’m not even going to start on RIAA equalisation needed to fit the bass into the grooves etc) then does this mean that if the instruments are recorded digitally in the studio as most now are then a vinyl pressing will sound the same as a cd / mp3 version of the same track? (not which sounds better, as discussed that’s subjective)

WTF is it with some people, why would you send a record through the post and not put a piece of cardboard in with it as a stiffener AND NOT WRITE PLEASE DO NOT BEND ON THE PACKAGING? I mean they’ve handwritten the address so it’s not like it would have taken more than a few seconds to do.

They didn’t get alot of money, that’s probably why they did a shit job, 79p for the record and £3 for the postage, probably trying to make up a bit by doing the postage as cheap as possible (still cost them £2.20 to post it). Or maybe they’ve never sent or bought vinyl through the post before, but more likely your right and they’re just a dick.

Mr H ,i looked into getting some vinyl pressed a couple of years ago (demos of my old band) ,and it is affordable ,but like everything else in the world you get what you pay for ,the price depends on several factors ,how loud you want the disc ,the length of the tracks and weather the tracks come from tape or MP3 ,here is a link to one of the better companies i found ,http://www.vinylcarvers.com/ ,and get this, there is a company that will press vinyl made from your MORTAL REMAINS(yes its true) if the company are still in buisness details of the procedure can be found at http://WWW.ANDVINYLY.COM ,and if there no longer do buisness i can send you one of their ads to prove they existed
