Evil viruses and being a bit crap on computers

Fellow Wombles…apologies if you already know about this but I’ve just had it and have to warn you ‘cos I like you all.

Anyway, if you never listen to me about anything else in your life then LISTEN TO ME NOW!

I know it sounds bleedin’ obvious but please be SO CAREFUL about what you click on the internet. I have just had to get my computer fixed, at the cost of 40 quid, as I managed to download a virus from an American website (god knows how…it was one of those ‘take this survey’ pop ups and I clicked ‘no’ and it installed itself).

The virus is called XP Secuirty 2011 and it tricks you into thinking that it is a virus checker (oh the irony…) and that all of your programmes have gotten sick so it won’t let you open up ANYTHING.

Each time it opens itself it attaches onto something else and eventually your whole computer is contaminated. I tried to fix it myself but it didn’t work so had to take it to the computer shop.

Here, I was told that my anti-virus programme (from 2007) was way too out of date for the ‘modern’ viruses. I’ve updated it now but please do not let this happen to you! Hopefully you guys aren’t as thick as me but I’m so worried that this may happen to somebody else I’m spreading the word!!!!

I’ve know a few people who’ve seen a message telling them they’ve got spyware on their machine and to download this program to fix it, gownloaded said program and hey presto - virus! I’ve had a couple of these viruses over the years. They always have a fantastically generic name (think the last 1 was called Internet Security) and they are a right pain in the ass. There are a couple of programs you can download, which “kill” the operation of the virus (r-kill I think the 1 I used was called) then you can look for the offending file(s) and delete. Last time it happened, I just searched the Internet on another computer and found a great forum which gave brilliant instructions on what to do, but it was VERY time consuming. Since then I have switched to Virgin Media for my broadband and their Internet security and virus checker seems to be working a treat.

iv been using NORTON INTERNET SECURITY for about ten years and never really get any problems ,if anything tries to attack me i get a big red norton screen and the thing is dealt with before i know it, its worth the £24 quid a year for the peace of mind ,and i always buy the latest version at christmas ,that way i never forget to update

I’ve currently got McAfee because it comes bundled with O2 broadband, but every now and then run spybot and adaware and both pick up things that McAFee miss. I swear there’s something else haunting the machine as it always sounds like its about to expire. Did have trouble with a fake antivirus called spyaxe a few years ago to.
