Ginger gig in Bristol

#

Started by Joel (Joel Wreford)

A rock hero of 16 years of mine, Ginger, just acted like a cunt throughout the Bristol gig tonight, said we weren’t enjoying ourselves enough, said he doesn’t want to perform live ever again, acted like a petulant child, then went all Axl Rose when some poor guy had the gall to enjoy himself and crowd surf during the last song. Ginger strop, tears, boo’s. Can’t believe it, thought he was the epitome of rock and roll. How wrong was I.

I guess we truly are spoiled when it comes to Therapy? - I’ve never once seen, or heard of, a gig where they threw a strop due to perceived lack of interest.

I’m guessing most of Ginger’s fanbase are in their 30’s and 40’s? What does he expect on a Tuesday night, in all fairness? And then when someone actually follows his heed and tries to outwardly enjoy himself, Ginger throws a wobbly? Not good. I think that sort of behaviour exposes one’s unhappiness with life.

I’m not judging in any way as i wasn’t there, but I did see Ginger in Southampton on Sunday and he was his usual fantastic self. Top books for the most part.

Well I think Ginger´s acting now (I´m not on twitter so I dont exactly know what´s happening there…) is somekinda “theater”, dunno…Met him at HRH in Prestatyn and he was in a really good mood so all this what I´m reading now feels quit strange. He is really pleased with that pledge thingy and he praised Fyfe´s work there on those (was it 11 tracks) songs he hits the skins. So really srange if Ginger is takin a “rollercoaster ride” now…

I’m not sure, but I don’t think it was the initial surfer that hurt the tech guy. Because as he surfed it was only the band on stage. But then Ginger got pissy and headbutted the mic really hard. Either way it’s sad someone got hurt, but Ginger isn’t the consummate rock star I thought he was. There was a lot of disappointed people there, me included.

His praise of the rest of the tour so far has been glowing - bands, performances and crowds. The Glasgow show was amazing. He has had a hell of a busy year of ups and downs though, as someone just noted on the Wildhearts forum, he must be pretty worn out whether he knows it or not and I suspect he just needs to let himself have a well-deserved break.

Oh yes. The triple album is going to be all kinds of great, as is his TFE album next year! He’s always been prone to mood swings, it’s a shame it’s left a bad taste in some people’s mouths. The first time I saw Therapy? the show ended with Andy threatening someone in the crowd, trying to lamp them with a microphone, and then storming off kicking over an amp on the way. No encore. The infamous Aberdeen Lemon Tree show on the Suicide Pact tour. I was left feeling pretty weird after, but realised everyone has bad times and anyone can snap now and then. Twitter unfortunately makes it much easier for people to watch when you reach that point. A bit of patience and understanding (on both sides) goes a long way. But I’m sure everyone will survive this!

You’re right Cactus, maybe it’s for the best that Andy doesn’t embrace social media! At the same time though, I think it’s one thing to have a gripe with one person who’s done something in particular to piss you off, and a different thing to have an issue with the entire crowd who have showed up and paid to watch you on a Tuesday night.

Joel,
After reading plenty of views on what happened in Bristol it seems that Ginger wasnt in the best mood but played a full set minus a minute or so of music then stopped as a crowd surfer trashed his gear and his roadie ended up in A & E because he split open his head. I’ve been a massive fan of Ginger for years and have never known a rock star to be so in touch with his fans by answering questions on formspring daily, twitter, the pledge music campaign, he also was putting people on the guest list at the gigs on this tour who couldnt afford a ticket no questions asked. The guy is an inspiration and shows other supposed rock stars how to do it, in my book.
He’s mentioned a few times over the last month or so that he needs a break from touring and isnt enjoying himself that much, still he’s been putting on great shows this tour. Sounds like he was probably having an off night but still played an entire gig and just got pissed off when it went to shit at the end. Whether you lay the blame on Ginger, the crowd or something else, this should give you no reason to attack the guy on twitter by saying he’s shit all over the wildhearts legacy and then being surprised when he answers back. If you’d posted Gingers previous tweets you’d have seen his explanation that his pedal was broken for the reason he went off early. Its up to you whether you believe him or not.
At the end of the day the guys only human and it seems like he’s been having a hard time of touring lately but for the sheer amount of work he does for charity and his fans should be enough for people to relent from winding the guy up for a bad gig, i’m sure most bands have had shit nights. Give the man a break.
Also sending NME a tweet slagging Ginger off is no way to go about things, for all the years of touring and recording its a pretty shit thing to do to the bloke.

Have to say Joel your attitude is pretty sh*t on this. To have an issue is one thing, but keep it between the two of you. Ginger is easy to contact at any time. But instead you’ve gone to every open forum you can find and slated the guy…

Having said that though Gingers response is equally disappointing.

One thing I would echo from SG5s post is the fact that for this tour he extended an open invitation to all fans who could not afford a ticket. Let him know & he would put them on the guest list free of charge. I cannot think of any other artist doing similar in the 15years I have been going to gigs. He also spends a huge amount of time almost daily answering fans questions on formspring. I don’t know many artists that put the same amount of effort in.

So he had a bad gig. It happens to every group (remember the Jagermeister gig T? Played??). Be a man about it and let it go. Instead think of the 16 years of great time he gave you, and accept people are human.

My attitude? This is crazy, it was Gingers ridiculous attitude that caused all this! All I can say is that last night in particular, I was upset because he ruined my idea of him, so yeah I went on 2 forums to vent. Look at this review, it’s not just me.

” If we’re not exactly the best audience ever, we’re certainly better than Norwich or bloody Swansea. But wait! It seems that now we’re suddenly a bunch of cunts. The mood-swinging dreadlocked Geordie has noticed a small pocket of punters who are clapping with insufficient enthusiasm. An “I don’t know why some fucking people go to gigs” tirade ensues, during which he threatens to stop touring altogether and offers the offenders a tenner each to fuck off.”

Everyone is saying he’s only human etc, but I don’t care. I didn’t pay to watch a guy who’s feeling a bit down and keeps telling the crowd we’re shit. You’re all being too precious. Having said that Ginger has now apologised which I, and many others I’m sure, appreciate.

Dont worry Joel, everyone is entitled to an opinion and for ginger to take his mood out on a bunch of people that paid to see him is unacceptable really, considering he gets paid to live in New York and be a rock star thanks to US, his loyal fans! If you’re having a terrible time standing there getting paid to sing songs for 90 mins a night and thats your job FUCKING HELL! Go and work in a factory then!
On the other hand for some dick to wreck Gingers night by destroying his stuff (which he probably got free but I won’t mention that!) is not on either.
My overall view - guy who attacked Ginger and his roadie = twat.
Ginger for slating the whole crowd and verbally abusing them = twat.
It’s a draw!

Rock stars should be proud in these economically crap times that they get to stand on stage and whinge and get paid for it, not taking it out on their fans! Like I said before I met the guy and he was a twatmonkey and for that reason I haven’t wasted anymore of my hard earned cash on him! And just before anyone attacks me, I do this for a living aswell, Ive stood there and been abused and had to put up with drunken idiots trying to grab my guitar but I grinned and beared it and got through it because I am a pro! : )

You cant be that loyal, as he doesnt live in New York at all. I’m not having a go at anyone particularly I just think that Ginger is probably the most open and approachable rock stars out there who appreciates his fans more than anyone. He was obviously having a shit day, a bad gig or whatever, just let it go. For people to ask for their money back for the gig and for pledging on an album is just ridiculous as the amount he does for his fans is above and beyond what fans expect of their idols. I’m not saying he is unaccountable for his actions its just that in the grand scheme of things, the amount of good he does far outweighs a shit gig.
I’ve met him before and you couldnt meet a nicer bloke

Yes your attitude Joel. Whilst I will not condone any of what Ginger said at this gig, I’m pretty certain he wont have been ranting & raving when he said it like you have been at him today. You say he has now apologized, I wonder if you have apologized to him? Because even if he started it, you & others escalated it with your abuse of him today.

Still, given you say that you don’t care whether one of your so called rock idols is having a hard time of it, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Its just makes me a bit sad.

Last post on this because im getting bored of it now. I said what ginger said at the gig, not after it. What ginger has posted on Twitter was out of line & im very disappointed personally that he reacted this way. Its a hark back to the bad old days of Ginger that we haven’t seen in years.

But im not talking to Ginger, Im talking to you. A guy who tweet the editor ofNME to bad mouth Ginger, a guy who posts messages about the Gingers sitting on his legacy because he wasn’t up for a single gig in your eyes. Despite many people at the same gig having a contrary opinion to you. A guy who seems to think he’s owed by someone he doesn’t even know…

But you clearly don’t see me opinion so I’ll leave it at that. You’ve succeeded in making Ginger look like a twat, which I guess was your intention. The problem is you’ve also made yourself look like a dick in the process

Thanks for the video, puts the gig into a clearer picture. I can sympathise with Ginger, he even explained on stage that the equipment has been unplugged and they cant play anymore, the roadie had been twatted round the face due to the crowd surfer. To say he had an Axl Rose moment is ridiculous, for some reason you have a massive bee in your bonnet about wanting to bring Ginger down by tweeting him, slagging him off not only on this board but on the Wildhearts board, which unsurprisingly they all echoed what a coupled of us are thinking on here. That your attitude stinks.
I agree with gb199 your intention was to make Ginger look like a total prick, in my eyes you’ve only suceeded in making yourself look like one. Ginger has apologised and offered out of his own pocket money for anyone wanting a refund for the 1 minute of music lost, where as you continue to slag him off
