Fyfe Ewing

Started by Joel (Joel Wreford)

Is it just me or was/is Fyfe the best drummer in the world. I was listening to Totally Random Man and Auto Surgery the other day and the drumming is completely out of this world. No disrespect to Graham of course, hes a great drummer, but I never heard anything like Fyfes drumming before or since. Awesome.

Has anyone else noticed this?

As for speed. Just listen to Dave Lombardo or Gene Hoglan. They are amazing…and better than Lars ;-)

Lars Ulrich a great drummer???? You heard James Hetfields recent comment right? I’d have to agree with him saying that Lars hasn’t really become the world greatest drummer in all these years. And that’s an understatement by the way.

Fyfe is one of the best drummers in the world, but NO ONE plays the drums better than Lars. He maybe isn’t the most technical drummer but to me that doesn’t matter. Listen to the songs RobbyVDH mentioned (or any other Metsong) and you know what I mean.

I liked Fyfe’s drumming because he had a unique sound and feel. That’s also the main reason why I got into T? A song like Teethgrinder is tipically T? and that’s what I’m looking for: bands that play their own music with their own style. Like T? and Metallica.

Mike Portnoy is the best technical drummer I know. He puts melody in drumming and uses very awkward beats. And used to play Neil Peart patterns in reverse…yummie!

I think someone should set standards or give a definition of what he or she thinks is ‘good’ before asking a question like ‘who is the best doing this or that’

What you think is good, does not necessarily mean that someone else thinks the same about it, you know, it’s a very subjective thing! In other words, it’s not possible to define the word ‘good’ for everyone, that’s a matter of personal taste.

That’s why this is an impossible discussion.. If the definition of ‘good’ differs from person to person, then ‘best’ will also differ from person to person.

Hmm, interesting discussion I’ve started here!

Some very intelligent comments have been made, most of which I’d have to agree with. But whatever your definition of a ‘good’ drummer, I can’t see how anyone can rate Graham above Fyfe. Graham isn’t bad or even average, he is a very accomplished drummer but Fyfe was technically excellent and very original. Class act. Fucking outstanding live.

I also think people may have bypassed Dave Grohl too quickly, one of my personal gods! Not just on the drums but as a singer/guitarist. Anyone who can headline Reading Festival with two different bands deserves a lot of credit.

Hi! This is my first time posting here. I’ve lurking for some time, but today I read these posts about drumming and thought I had something to say. I’ve been drumming since I was 6 (now 24). I have fulfilled my only dream in life: to be a pro drummer. Now I’m in a band that has a three LP’s contract with Virgin. Our first record sold about 20,000 copies. It’s a kinf of Top-40 band, pop-rock songs and a girl singing, but with a quality that, for me, makes it miles ahead of commercial. And this means TV apparitions, videos, etc. It’s funny.
I also work as a session drummer and have recorded albums for many artists in studio.
And, last but not least, I have my own band, a hard-rock trio (just like Therapy? at their beginning) and he have released three albums.

Now: Fyfe wasn’t an excellent drummer. His distinctive sound only consists of a very tight snare drum head and the same rythm over and over. Tecnically I can only admit that his simple stroke roll was fast, but his tempo and independence were really poor. Hey, but don’t get confused; I don’t need a band formed of ‘virtuosos’ to like it!
Graham hasn’t got a good sound in any of the albums he’s done, but tecnically is miles ahead. He is neither a super-drummer, and has also some tempo lacks, but at least we can hear him some double stroke rolls, hand&feet combinations and beat displacements. Besides I think his playing is more tasteful. He uses to play with with the snare on 4 by desplacing it backwards or forward, while Fyfe always got stuck in the same old rythm with snare on 2, 4 and the 7th and 9th sixteenh note.

Now, I can’t really understand the people that, knowing very little or nothing about drukmming, scream out that the drummer in their favourite band is the best drummer in the world. It happens usually with Lars Ulrich, which is (no doubt) the poorest drummer ever! No independence, no technique, no tempo (AAAARRRGH!), no feeling, no nothing! Ask any drummer! And if you still think he is good, watch him alive… and then I’ll tell you what Pro Tools consists of.

Of course, there are good drummers in rocks style, but the best you are going to find come from jazz-fusion kind of music. Vinnie Colaiuta, for me and for most drummers in the world, is probably the best drummer alive. He mainly a session drummer, but has gone on tour with Frank Zappa and with Sting. Dave Weckl is the most technical and musical drummer out there, but I prefer Vinnie because of an emotional feel I get when I see him play. Dannis Chambers also comes to my mind as one of the better drummers today.

Talking about rock, although no one of them gets to that high level, the best one you can find is, of course, Danny Carey in first place: unbelievable independence, rudiments and playing in odd times. Some of you have mentioned some other good ones such as Mike Portnoy, Stewart Copeland, the guy from Blink 182…

Hell, I’m writing fast because I have little time and my English is a little bit rusted, but at least I hope you get to the point. Believe me. It’s true!

I want to say hello to everyone in this fantastic message board and to Renne for the terrific page he’s done. Keep up the good work!

Well, if Smyrma is right, then we should all accept than Brian May is a better guitarist than J. Hanneman or Lee Ranaldo. Fuck that. Better technique doesn’t necessarily mean better music. All i know is that Fyfe sounded like no other drummer i ‘ve ever heard, and his drumming sounds very good too.

Welcome Smyrma, cool that you’ve decided to make the step from lurking to posting. Excellent first post!

I like Graham’s drumming better than Fyfe’s, but simply because it sounds better in my opinion, not based on which one is the better technical drummer. I leave that to the people who obvisouly have a better founded opinion about that like Smyrma.

Smyrma, what is the name of the band with which you have a contract with Virgin?

Now if you could only spell my name right.. ;-) Cheers, Rene.

fyfe might not have been the most technical or most skilled drummer, but his style was aggressive, very tight, fast, original, basic but precise and very hard hitting. but most of all he got ATTITUDE, which in the end i prefer over technical brilliance.. that goes with the other instuments also; i’d rather listen to misfits than dream theater!

I agree with the general consensus: Fyfe had a very unique sound (it sounded a bit like beating trash cans), and he did some great stuff. Graham seems more ‘generic’, but is technically superior.

I didn’t like Lars Ulrich’s playing on the old Metallica albums, but I have the feeling that he’s gotten better over time. I actually enjoy his drumming on S&M.

Dave Grohl, though simplistic at times, is a great drummer IMO. His drumming on ‘The Colour and the Shape’ is fan-fucking-tastic. Andyes, his singing is great too. He’s a great person after all : )

I wonder why nobody mentioned Jimmy Chamberlain here. He’s probably my favorite drummer, with many different styles, and a good, sometimes jazzy, groove. Actually, the drumming I saw/heard during the Pumpkins’ Machina-tour rocked me like no drumming ever rocked me before.

Matt Cameron is another guy worth mentioning here.
