he has the distinctive sound that makes a great drummer.
fyfe has a distinctive sound too, and that’s why he’s a great drummer.

Fyfe, Matt from Soundgarden/Pearl Jam, Danny Carey from Tool, Jimmy Chamberlin from SP are the best ‘rock’ drummers I’ve heard. For metal, it’s Igor Cavalera and Dave Lombardo.
As for Graham being technically better than Fyfe, that’s only true if you regard jazz and jazz-esque style drumming as the technically superior form of drumming. Graham is a jazz trained drummer (his father was in the Guinness Irish jazz band), just because Fyfe is self-taught, does that make him the poorer drummer?
Take ‘Teethgrinder’ for example, it’s obvious Graham couldn’t play this disco/percussion drum-style so he plays it with a more regular
‘rock’ beat, which in my opinion, is nowhere near as good as the original. Watch a video gig of Fyfe’s playing back in 92/93 and then call him a technically inferior drummer! It seriously makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I witness some of his playing! His rhythm, licks, power & precision are amazing.

Allright, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t say that Fyfe is a BAD drummer. I just tried to explain that he is not ‘the best drummer in the world’. And my opinion is that Graham’s loose style fits better with Therapy?’s music that Fyfe’s machine-like sound.

The name of the Virgin band I play in is ‘Serena’. You can check it at the Spanish Virgin web page, http://www.virgin-records.es.

My rock trio is called ‘El bueno, el feo y el malo’ (which means ‘The good, the bad & the ugly’). You can check our second album at http://stage.vitaminic.es/el_bueno_el_feo_y_el_malo/

And, by the way, to finish introducing myself… My fave T? songs are specially those with a sad touch like ‘Sister’ and ‘Born too soon’. I also like a lot ‘Suing god’, ‘Misery’, ‘Black eye, purple sky’, ‘Trigger inside’ and ‘Dance’. Hummm… that makes 7. I’ll add three more to complete my ‘Top 10’: ‘Screamager’, ‘Nausea’ and ‘Totally random man’. That’s it.

Talk about taking something to far! Who cares if Fyfe is apparently ‘technically crap’! His drumming sounds unbelievable and fits the songs perfectly. Its incredibly original which makes him stand out from other drummers. Sure this is due to a tight snare but fuck, it sounds amazing.

I’d love to hear some of Suicide Pact with Fyfe on the drums.

I don’t think being technically perfect could be less important for a band like Therapy?, or most other rock bands. I think you’ve got a few priorities back to front.

And i know music is the ultimate in subjectivity, but Jazz…please!

i think Graham is a better drummer than he used to be, and he’s also so much more of an entertainer than fyfe ever was. when you watch him on stage him and michael are always playing off each other and doing things to wind each other up. I know sod all about drumming, and techniques, but i know who i prefer. Thanks to Smyrmyr though for injecting some informed opinion into the discussion!

I think that thereis o two types of the T? songs. I will explain it on the Babyteeth’s songs. There is songs like ‘Innocent X’, ‘Meat Abstract’ which is based especially on the fyfe drums and other for ex. ‘Skyward’ that its based on guitar. In the first case, i think tah fyfe style is the best for T? - becouse if there wasn his drums -> there’s no song. I the second case, i’s no matter.
BTW I think that Andy isn’t a very good guitarist. :(

If it sounds good then who cares what skill and ability the people who have made this great music have. Fyfe got me into playing the drums as did John Stanier from Helmet. As far as im concerned they played what was perfect for their songs and had a passion about it. These guys are my heroes and although they may not be the best technical drummers, i still rate them as excellent and blinding players.

Hello to you too. Cheers and welcome.

Anyway, my story is a quite similar to yours since I started playing drums mainly because of Mr. Ewing (and the fact that I suck at playing guitar) and have done so for about more or less seven years. I don’t know anything about drummers being technical or not so I won’t go into that. I just think that they (Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Ewing) both have their own style. Fyfe’s style is more economical, more precise and tighter, Graham is in my opinion a more of a groove-oriented drummer, his style is more loose which allows the songs breathe more. Graham is a rock ‘n roll drummer, Fyfe is a twisted disco drum machine.

I like it when a drummer has his/her own distinctive sound that fits the song. I guess my favourites are, in addition to Mr. Ewing and Mr. Hopkins, the all-powerful Charlie Watts and Grunge Drum God Matt Cameron. Matt Chamberlain is also great and so is the tour drummer of Khaled (I forgot the name, Khaled and his band were in Finland in 2000 (as far as I remember)).

Title: Musicians

I don’t wish to offend anyone (especially T? fans!) but the ‘proper’ musicians I have met and jammed with all seemed to be complete twats.

Yes they know all there is to know about there particular instrument(s) but this seems to get in the way of letting themselves go.

Bands like T? and the one I’m in started when they were kids straight from School and look at the quality of the songs T? have produced. Being a musician is secondary to just actually being in a band therefore, despite what anybody says, I think both Fyfe and Graham were cracking drummers who complimented the songs on their respective T? albums and nothing can take that away from them.

I think Scotdamn (nice nick, man!!) is right, when quoting the sample from “church of noise”. I know many musicians, who try to play the most complicated solo or riffs or whatever and to have 3 billion breaks in their songs, but mostly that´s just boring music without any hooklines.

I think, T? are not the perfect musicians (although they had two fantastic drummers), but they “put their soul into it”, which is much more important, than having the “fastest fingers” on the instruments.

As least this thread hasn’t gone down the lines of the endless Kirk Hammett is god/suck/whatever threads that rage on the Metallica boards. I’ve always “preferred” Graham’s drumming, but the drummer in my band says Fyfe is pretty amazing, Teethgrinder very difficult/impossible and Stuart Copeland his fave.

Buzzweasel…there are some twats in music (musos posuers etc) but I’ve always kept my feet on the ground (I hope).
I wish everyone could loosen up too.

We played so gigs and everyone enjoyed it because we’re fun to listen to and fun to see.
We we’re looking for a second gitarist.
We met some guys who could play every solo of metallica but couldn’t play our songs properly.
they could only play with a cd but not with a band.
Improvising was a strange word for them.
Being a good gitarist doesn’t have to mean you’re a musician.

I too have never had much respect for musicianship. I’ve always thought that drummers are never musicians, they’re just the smelly guys that follow them around. Or maybe it’s just me.

The bands that consist of school mates and play together for decades are usually the best ones. One could say that they grow together with their music and there’s that unity thingy too. Some of the band members turn out to be great musicians, some don’t. Well, who cares if the music rocks, right?

Some fine words.
I’ve had 6 lessons on bass in my life, and I learned nothing. He just wanted to run through various songs.
After I’d played along to various CD’s (Sabbath, Therapy? etc) I though “get in a band, jump in at the deep end”.
Never looked back.
A mate of mine once said “loads of people are brilliant in the bedroom. Gig? Nah!!”

Shit, some of this discussion got a little serious. I don’t know the in’s and outs of drumming, so thought I would just to tell you some of the drummers that I have enjoyed seeing live in the last couple of years.

Just random order, no preferences

Lars - although his big headed attitude is irratating
Dave Lombardo
Igor Cavalera
Nick Menza
Mike Bordin, from Faith no More, was fantastic at this years Ozzfest with the man.
Vinnie Paul of Pantera is one fast buggar as well!!!
