How many slices of bread in a round of toast?

#

Started by Sabotage

There’s a big debate going on around here (Worcestershire is like that) about this subject.
There seem to be various answers.

(Before changing the message boards’ software in August 2007 this discussion contained a poll, which may return in the future)

A round normally means some for everybody in the group so wouldn’t it depend on how many people there were? I think two slices per person is good.

most toasters fit 2 slices of bread, so 2

Is it not just one each, and therefore would depend on how many people are round?

I’m glad everyone so far knows what toast is…

Right, i used to work in a cafe and the considered opinion whenever we were asked (and, surprisingly enough, we were asked a few times - drunken bikers obviously don’t have much else on their minds) was that a round of toast is however many slices the waitress says it is. If you’re making it yourself, then a round is however many slices you really want at that moment in time.

(Wasn’t it just the other day someone was talking about Talky Toaster from Red Dwarf? I think he’s infiltrated our message board!)

Definitely no smegging flapjacks!

A round of drinks is one each - is that not a universal rule?

Yeah but one slice of toast is a bit measly, what if you had a variety of spreads and couldn’t choose?

Looks like the “2’s” are doing very well here.
I’m a “1er” and I reckon 1 because it’s like counting bullets.
1 bullet = 1 round of ammunition.
I used to be a drunken biker, but I’m sober now.
reason I asked in the first place is because I went in my local cafe the other day and asked for a cup of tea and 1 round of toast. The girl went to put 2 slices in the toaster. I said that I only want 1 round. She looked at me like :-( and said but 2 slices is one round in a real nasty way. I said no, its 1 slice (cos I’m a 1er) but ‘cos she was so nasty about it, I’m doing some research.
Most people are 1ers. About 10% are 2ers (I know this poll shows different) and there are some 3ers and so on. I just want to get some ideas, so next time I go there, I can have a real good arguement.
I’ve even got stuff off the net, from bread and toaster manufacturers.
Sad eh!

This is my point - the waitress is always right! :D

While we’re here, why is it called a ‘round’? A round of drinks is one each, but a round of toast is just for you. Why isn’t it called a portion of toast or something? And, apart from anything else, toast isn’t round.

(Also, how many sandwiches in a round of sandwiches? Personally, i’d think it’d be more than two…)

They do have the good grace to call it a ‘squared circle’ sometimes, but i get your point. Maybe at some point in the past toast was round… worth thinking about…

Excuse me, i’m just going down to Tescos to get myself a life…

A round of golf (a game I’ve always despised) is once round the course, on a paper round you only delivery to each house once and a round of monopoly is one go each, so I’m a confirmed 1’er. That said, I’d probably defer to the waitress, on the grounds that she has the power to burn the toast if you’re trouble…

They’re on the shelf next to the bottles of self-esteem.

Getting back to the original subject - i asked my ex-husband how many slices of toast make a round, and he was absolutely definite that it was just one. In fact, he made it quite clear that anyone who thought differently was not only wrong, but stupid. Mind you, he’s always been a bit like that…

You tend to have a round of toasts at a wedding, and that’s usually more than one, so I think there’s some leeway there…

Mother and girliefriend both insist that it’s 2. Both also complain about being overweight…

Hmm. I doubt it’s the extra slice of toast making them overweight (unless you have jam, honey and banana toasties - those things are killers).
