The Wildhearts

As they are currently riding (relatively) high in the charts @ 17, what do others think of them. They’re my favourite band after Therapy? and the closest band in sound and style to them in m y opinion. I don’t mean that they write similar music but both bands tend to change their musical approach after each album and yet always produce outstanding stuff that i like. Check out Endless Nameless by the Wildhearts - one of the most distinctive albums of all time.

Also Ginger (the singer), loves Therapy? He said he cried when he 1st heard Safe of Semi Detached (the big girl)

Earth Vs The Wildhearts is one of the best British rock albums of all time, but pretty much anything by them is worth getting…Dont be Happy Just Worry, PHUQ and Fishing For Luckies in particular are all fantastic…

I love em, saw them live a good few times…

Their bassist has just left the band, hes checked himself into rehab, but they are continuing on…Ginger and the boys actually seem to be going for it for real this time, hopefully we can have a few years without them spliting up and getting back together again a bunch of times!

I came here to start a thread on the Wildhearts and was astounded to see there’s already one! I love the Wildhearts. At least I did when they released “Fishing For Luckies”. Most of their B-Sides were pretty cool and Ginger’s creativity seemed to be endless. Then came “Endless, Nameless” a brave, yet not very good album. And the new singles? Well, if you ask me they are only average. I’m not saying The Wildhearts are dead but they still have to get back to form (that term again).
Plus: they finally need to come to Austria for Christ’s sake! Do they ever tour outside the U.K. or Japan?

So any response to iChutzpah! then?

I think it’s cool, but it’s taken a few spins to get in to it.

Jackson Whites - Late Blink 182 start
Plastic Jebus - White Zombie riff with a classic Wildhears chorus
Tim Smith - I heard this in hmv and thought it was Machine Head.
You Took The Sunshine from New York - Sounds a bit like a Mother City from Valor Del Corazon

Overall, not a classic WH album - not a patch on Earth Vs, or The Wildhearts. Probably better than …Must be Destroyed, sp probably on a par with p.h.u.q.

The new album is probably the poppiest they have done, though the songs are very good. I think that as just a Wildhearts fan you would be surprised at it, but as a fan of the collective works (Ginger, Jellys, Sorry And The Sinatras etc) it makes a lot of sense and is a good progression from the last one (which by the way was awesome too!)

Yeah, there’s a handful of standout tracks on it, but when I sit down for an hour it’s Earth Vs every time. I can’t remember the last time I listed to p.h.u.q. all the way through.

For me Earth Vs is their Troublegum, its a great album but I’ve played it to death, and ever since CJ rejoined its kinda dominated the live setlists. It just kinda makes me want to hear something different.

My other favourite is Endless Nameless, which I hated when it came out, but I had a violent itch to hear it again about 3 years ago and ever since I have loved it. So only 10 years then! Maybe Shameless will be a big hit in 2012?

I really wish they would re-record some of the Endless Nameless songs, some are perfect as is, but I’d love to hear “clean” versions of Nurse Maximum or Anthem.

They did play Anthem a few times live - sounded really good.

Endless Nameless is a great album, I can see why it pisses some people off. I dont even hate the production on it, I used to love how it sounded on my old stereo, it sounded like the speaker cone was being shat through the front grill on those big kick drum hits :)

Pissjoy, Thunderfuck, Heroin, Urge - all really great tracks! infact you’ve inspired me to go off and listen to it :D

I don’t believe they’ve played Anthem since Danny skipped town (correct me if I’m wrong, I frequently am.)

I remember seeing them play it live on the tour in about 2001, supported by anti-product, when they came back only playing pre-p.h.u.q. stuff. It stuck out because it was the wrong timeframe.

I’m sure I’ve heard Anthem live, and I think I’ve also heard Urge played as well (think it was in the John Poole era)

As a young ‘un I detested it when I got it, sold it immediately. Re-bought it to complete my collection and listened to it again and Jesus it’s incredible! Just sonically crazy yet the songs work just fine

Same here. :) I think it works better as an album than earth vs does, thats not a criticism of earth vs cos its a close run thing, but i think that one is more a collection of songs than a mood piece.

Mind, i’m missing the 8 tracker don’t be happy, which, of course, is just ace. Dreaming in A is my fave wildies song.

p.h.u.q. knits together nicely but some of the songs feel like bridges rather than songs in their own right.

There isn’t a bad song on Earth vs. and it flows beautifully.

Yeah, i agree with the bridge thing, baby strange being a prime example. But thats why i feel it makes more of an “album” than earth vs, which any song could stand alone out of context. Still not keen on news of the world, mind!

Earth Vs is great but it sounds a bit too quasi heavy metal for me. I still havent forgiven ginger for not speaking to me in nottingham, after being a fan of his for years and helping him pay his rent by buying his shit i am still annoyed by that!!

Fishing for luckies is my favourite, it sums up the wildhearts to me, i agree with the earth vs and troublegum comparison of gavs.

thing with chutzpah is youve got to take it as what it is, a progression, after alot of listens i find it very hit and miss, some tracks are amazing and some are bollocks, technically it isnt that good either, but the production and good songs make up for that, i just wish the album was more like its title track with lots of tempo changes and riffs and stuff like classic wildhearts but still with the progressiob
